Email & Password Illegally Altered

Yesterday, my email and password for this site were altered neither my knowledge nor consent.

Under the data protection act, it is illegal to alter my personal data in this way and any further transgressions will be followed up with a complaint to The Information Commissioners Office.

Very shabby behaviour by admin or moderators. What are they afraid of ?

So who changed it?
Are you saying someone running the site changed it?
Or has someone managed to breach the security on your PC/laptop/mobile device?
I'd be checking my bank accounts before posting threads like this.

Ditto. More likely that security elsewhere has been breached to allow someone else to gain access to existing email and password.

I am puzzled though. If the email and password on the OPs account had been changed, how has the OP managed to regain access to his account?

How about that. Obviously some nasty pieces of work .. at work.

What goes around comes around. Had the same alleged thing happen to me some years ago when I regularly contributed to a so called MG and Rover enthusiast website which I regard is riddled with such poisonous types.

Some sheetbag there had admin help to access my confidential and personal details. My fault for being so trusting and using the same/similar easy to remember password for several things. I soon stopped posting there and have not done so ever since. Nasty pieces of work.

I use a more complex series of passwords now and no further problems since but, I'm ever watchful.

Be careful out there...

Well if your email was "hitlerdidnothingwrong@mystruggle.com" then they may have had just cause... but i'm not entirely sure what is going on here or why anyone is talking about this?

I'm going to go have some coffee now.

The owners of this site have confirmed that a digit or digits, were added to both password and email which rendered both useless.
There was no external breach of security.

I understand that this is not the first time that such a thing has happened. I would suggest that the sites owners look carefully at the admin logs as someone with admin access is overstepping the mark here.

I'll do some digging, see what comes up. Could've been a glitch (god knows we have enough of those) but we'll see what we see

Some very strange goings on here lately as well as this, have noticed a couple of fairly innocuous welcome threads appearing and disappearing too. Gremlins, hackers or something more sinister at work?

Not strange at all. If multiple new user IDs are being set up by the same old shower, freely admitted on certain other so called MG enthusiasts* web sites, then MODS later detect this increasing nasty piece of work practice. Good for them ditching the welcome. Then weeding out those with poisonous intent. Obviously some still get through as evidence on this site has clearly demonstrated for some years.

Rocket Science it aint.

Well done Sunderland... Come on The Black Cats....

In that case why not just ban the miscreants? If that's what's happening then tampering with accounts and deleting innocuous posts leaves a very poor impression. It reminds me of the kind of behaviour one sees from children rather than grown men and that's not the kind of online community I would like to be a part of.

I'd like to think there's another explanation.

Those who set up multiple accounts for underhand purposes tend to do so through different proxies, which makes them harder to weed out (it gives each identity a different ip address). They only become recognisable by the type of things they eventually start posting/claiming, the wording, phraseology and post structure, usually culminating in somebody accusing them of being someone we have seen before, followed by the same denials time after time. Those of us who have been here a long time soon see the tell-tale signs - they are like a fingerprint and quite unmistakeable

To be honest, I think removing the posts and deleting their account entirely is the right procedure.

Plus they all drive CITYROVERs and 75s

That according to the information they provide during their multiplicity of numerous different user ID applications over the years as freely admitted elsewhere on-line.

I have highlighted the most salient points in your insightful post. A dead giveaway and simply a matter of time before it emerges they are the same old, same old bitter miseries. Miseries lurking with bitterness eating away fuelling their pointless poisonous intent. Welcome they will never be and soon rightly withdrawn. Even if MODs are 99% efficient at weeding them out, inevitably the odd 1% get through and a matter of time before even they show their true intent.
