Ebay PayPal auto payment .. Be wary.

I recently bought a set of Brake Pads off Ebay for 19.50p Buy it Now. Clicked on the Pay Now prompt and was horrified to see they had auto-included an additional 76 for some wheels I had paid cash on collection for and collected a week or so previously.

The additional "Basket" item I had already paid cash for appeared unseen below my screen and only appeared after I had activated Pay Now.

This auto-inclusion process is annoying and will happen if any item you had paid cash for has not been shown by the seller as paid.

Time and again I get auto-reminders for stuff I had paid cash on collection for.

It's all sorted now but, be wary of this basket case auto-inclusion for stuff you've already paid cash for.

Thus, when collecting stuff and paying Cash on collection remind the seller politely to mark as paid on a timely basis to avoid this sort of thing. I did that on this occasion but, the seller had problems with his device and so could not mark as paid. Otherwise you could in theory pay twice without realising.

Not had to do so recently, but the last time I paid in cash, there was provision in the drop down menu against the item in the list on the 'My EBay' page, to mark the item as 'Payment Sent', which I think should prevent it then being auto-included in future payment pages.

Yes, there is thanks.

Reminder to self. Be proactive always in future and not rely on others to do the right things on a timely basis.

What torpedoed that for me was the jack location on my LapTop had been stressed and so ran on battery power only as unable to charge. I got a warning window saying 11 minutes battery left. Turned it off and when I tried to turn it on later, dead as a Dodo.

Used our old Steam Driven aged PC to search for local folks who could repair the Laptop's stressed Jack Port for the charger. Someone only four miles away had the small component and fixed it for me in minutes for 25.... ten days later.

Prior to that, I was prepared to go out and buy a new Laptop. Even checked out what was available at Currys/PC World. Glad I did not.

I had a similar issue with the previous version of PayPal when I was trying to
send money to people for stuff and as I type the email address all the previous
addresses I have sent money come up in a drop down and I click 'enter' after
typing and it sometimes selected one of the said adresses rather than the one
I typed, some burke ended up with 180 over 3 separate transactions and
refused to return it, PayPal literally did sod all to help as it was my work against
his, fought it for 3 months, in the end PayPal refunded 115 out of there pocket
and he kept the lot.

I have been using ebay/PayPal for about twenty years. I have read many times where folks have had issues which worked against them financially. Sometimes invariably due to auto-processes which few are aware of until they work against them like my recent experience.

In my case, the item I had already paid for was auto-added to my basket unseen below the page when I clicked the Pay Now prompt so I paid twice.

I like a bet and automated processes of some/all on-line bookies can work against you. Some years ago I had a Yankee bet ( eleven combination wagers ) on four premiership game results. I pressed the Bet Now for my bet and then closed down my LapTop. Job done. Later, when checking the results was delighted to see my bet had come up. All on-line bets are recorded. Trouble was, the odds changed as I pressed the Bet Now prompt and the bet now prompt was replaced with an Accept prompt which I did not action so my bet was not placed. I will not get caught out by that again. Now wait to see the "Bet Placed" confirmation. I lost nothing and I won nothing due to auto processes. Actually, the odds on one of my selections had lengthened hence the Accept prompt due to the change. Annoying because it is a lot like agreeing to buy something for 100 and then being asked if you still want it as the price is now 80. I have known that too!

Artificial Intelligence is not very bright ... sometimes. So, be wary when pressing those prompts...
