The MG E-Motion Is The Star Of The Shanghai Auto Show, Production In 2018

Published on April 20, 2017 by Tycho de Feijter

The MG E-Motion has been unveiled on the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, and for me it is the star of the show. It looks stunning from the grille to rear, with perhaps some Jaguar influences at the front. Best news: it will see production in the second half of next year.

MG executives have told Chinese media that the 2018 production car will be a plug-in hybrid, to be followed by a full-electric version in 2020. Sadly, there are no plans for a patrol version.

The concept is based on SAICís new pure-electric modular platform that will also underpin several other electric cars for the MG and Roewe brands. MG claims 0 to 100 in less than four seconds and a range of 500 kilometers. No specs yet on the PHEV.
SAIC, or the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, is the Chinese owner of MG and Roewe.

Another tidbit: wheelbase is 2700.

A perfect profile with a pronounced rear fender and broad shoulders. Only bad is the shiny strip over the front fender and door, it seems a bit too large and starts too close to the wheel arch.

A beautiful interior with a racy wheel, loads of leather and brushed metal, a digital instrument panel and a modestly sized touch screen for the infotainment. It is good to see that some automakers resist the urge of making these screens ever bigger, and then even bigger. We are seeing a lot of screens, especially in concept cars, that are focused on function instead of just in size.

A wink to the pup-up lights of lore. Brilliant!

The only thing the E-Motion can do without.

Lights are of a modest size, subtle spoiler integrated in the boot lid. Bumper diffuser unit looks great. Best are the wide rear fenders morphing masterfully in the shoulder.

Great cars deserve a big logo.

More brilliance here; the rear and front window and roof make for a full canopy, with three pieces of glass connected by small black strips. The roof is basically another window, which is a nice idea, but fitting in a sunroof will be hard and it would take a strong aircon to cool the cabin down in summer.

The MG E-Motion; probably the best looking Chinese car ever, and it will be on sale in about a year.

Really like it. I hope the production car is not too diluted down. It's good to see MG look more British again as the SUVs look a bit Far Eastern to me.

A bit surprised this hasn't attracted a bit more attention in the forum (and other forums as well). I am not in the know and I didn't see it coming - I am very pleasantly surprised. It is not 100% my thing since I am a bit analogue and I still like the sound of a petrol engine but I would seriously consider it. For under 30, the price is really good as well. The execution of the concept remains to be seen, hope they do a good job in quality etc.

The backs is different, good on them for that and the side proportions look fine. The front is doing that Jaguar/F-Pace current giant grill thing which they seem rather keen to copy at the moment, I really don't know why it looks bad on the Jags. ...and the sleepy headlights... hmm.

Having seen the GS concept a few years back, which looked very impressive, and then what was eventually released, which to me looks at best average, hard to have much in the way of enthusiasm until their is some kind of road car.

Given their record so far it will be impressive if they launch something based on this in 2018 as they say they will. But good luck to them.

So long as the range is ~200 miles (which it probably will be given it's size) I think this could do really well.

Of course whether they bother actually selling any in the UK is another thing altogether.

I'm wondering what the KW rating on the motors are and whether or not it will have a super quick charger fitted (which again is likely).

I also wonder what type of AC motor they are using.

We finally have the new MG sports car so many have craved, yet they've been on 5 comments in nearly two weeks. Very odd!

This concept looks fantastic. In a beautiful contemporary and with some genuinely interesting styling details. The fact it's electric is brilliant and will help MG carve a new niche.
