I had a conversation with my dad the other day and he surprised my saying he had considered the MG3 as a replacement for my mum's 2008 Fiat Panda. Less surprising was the conclusion that they wouldn't be getting one because of the expensive tax band - higher than my dad's Jaguar.

Rightly or wrongly this must be going on up and down the country. They need a sub-99g/km car or at least one that is £20 or £30 a year to tax.

I noticed 'car shop' were advertising a MG3 with £30 road tax. Thinking a new engine had emerged, it turned out to be a mistake!
I agree though, a 1.0 litre sub 99kg is needed aswell as a Turbo version. Sales would triple if not quadruple.

Tax bands don't matter after next year as after the first years tax everyone pays the same.

That is for cars registered after 1st April 2017. Wonder what will happen to cars registered between 2001 and 2016 which are rated on emissions?

Interesting though, as first year is part of the on the road cost, it removes the current incentive to buy a lower emissions car. No doubt driven by the huge loss to the treasury that all these low VED cars have caused.

Note that cars over £40,000 have to pay much more for first five years.

It's stupid, instead of penalising low emission cars they should be penalising the grading of them. Your sub 99g car is great in the lab but in the real world it's 130g and that's the tax band it should be in

There's a bit of an MG3 sale going on at the minute - I think there will be a lower emission version of the NSE engine available from September.

I've totally got over the con that is low tax bands as a selling point to a car. Why pay £thousands more for, example, a Supermini just to save £100 a year? You'd have to keep a car for 20 years to benefit over spending peanuts on an MG3. Still, it seems to work as a marketing ploy. Same thing with MPG.

Whilst some of the superminis from Ford, Vauxhall, etc are much more expensive, there are other vehicles with lower emissions that cost less or the same as an MG3.

A Fiat Panda with 10 miles (probably less than that) on the clock pre-registered on a 15-plate is currently advertised at £6500 and is £30 a year tax. Slower acceleration, sure, but cheaper on day one and when you need to tax it.

Are you sure that UK will get new engines for MG3/MG6 in September? No rumours, no photos... Is it possible, that UK will get new engines sooner than China? It‘s not their style.
Or it might be – first official news in September, first demonstrators in November and deliveries in 2016 January?

I don't think it will be a new engine, just a different tune of the engine we have now.

They managed to rework the diesel in the 6, I think they have done the same.

I've updated the first page of this thread with each years average monthly registrations.

It makes interesting reading and shows sustained growth.

Average monthly sales for 2015 is much higher than 2014, even though we still haven't had the Sept month for new plates. It is looking like by the end of September they will have sold more cars than in the whole of 2014 and every other year since the new company was formed.

Thanks for posting this, I have always wanted to know what the split was. MG6 always sells far more than we think.

Thanks for the MG3/6 split Mirtininkas. Unfortunately, I don't think "always sells" is strictly correct this year - in the most recent month we have data for, July, the MG6 only contributed 8% of sales. I've calculated MG6 sales as a percentage of total sales this year and found the figures quite interesting.
January 22% (MG6 sales=30)
February 41% (MG6 sales=26)
March 33% (MG6 sales=221)
April 23% (MG6 sales=69)
May 10% (MG6 sales=28)
June 15% (MG6 sales=35)
July 8% (MG6 sales=18)

Announced April 2015, on sale from May. So the new MG6 has given us a maximum of 35 sales in any one month so far.

So, despite being sharper-looking, more keenly priced and, supposedly, a better car all-round, the facelifted 6 is selling no better than the old one. Which is quite an achievement.

Surely time to offer more options, better colours, etc. etc., or put it out of its misery.
