temp guage issues

For those of you who have had the old temp guage issues before the dreaded HGF,

Yesterday I had a long motorway journey, towards the end my temp guage went above half way but then dropped back straight to its original position of just under half, it did it 2 maybe 3 times but was only ever reading 'hot' for about 5/10 seconds.

Is this likely to be the early signs of HGF or is it more likely to be a faulty thermastat?

The only reason I ask is it didn't seem high for long which I would have thought it would if the engine was overheating.

Also I'm in grimsby atm so if anyone sees me give me a flash.

Temp gauge sensor is different one from the ECU temp sensor. This 'jumps' on temperature readings could mean that temp gauge sensor needs inspection, and maybe replacement.

Sorry to jump on this thread but where is the temp gauge sensor? I have a problem with my gauge, whenever I give it the beans a little bit the temp gauge always drops really low before returning to the normal position, same happens if I'm coasting down a hill not using the accelerator

It is the one BELOW the one you described on the same pipe and position - just below. The one you mentioned is brown one and that is ECU temperature sensor. Gauge temp sensor is black or blue - facing down from the pipe. Brown one is facing to the radiator.

Is this same as the 1.1?

As we have a Blue one on the top and am trying to trace a problem (as per my other thread), what would happen if they got these in reverse, anything?

Yes it is the same with 1.1 engine.

This is the same question I was asking myself if I can just use brown when I needed to change my gauge temp sensor. Point is these sensors do not have same part number and because of that I stick with the part numbers Rover recomended. I assume there should be reason why they did not use same part number for gauge temp sensor.

Until now I did not found relevant answer to this question so I can only guess, for now.
