Autobox and tickover

Hi Guys
I have a 45 with CVT gearbox and a difficult issue to explain. Here goes.
I will be cruising along at say 2000 revs and when I lift off the throttle the revs don't drop for a long time. If I have a long enough space they will drop eventually.
I have to brake harder than I should and the car still wants to keep going. Then the revs suddenly drop and it is OK.
I know it is the gearbox holding up the revs because if I am cruising at the same speed and lift off and knock it into neutral the revs drop to tickover immediately.

Any ideas?
Does what I have said make sense?

Garages
Sounds a bit dangerous. I'd start by checking the fluid condition and level. Otherwise, could it be the selector-cable adjustment? I've not worked on this transmission so can't really advise further.
