Hose hard when cold - valid test?

Hi,

Starting from cool, after about 4 minutes I get hard upper radiator hose with pressure.

Is that an early sign of a blown headgasket, or is it normal?

Thanks

Depends on which engine. If it is a diesel then a certain sign of head gasket failure if the 4 minutes is spent at idle (Rather than driving it!).

The uppoer hose on my Rover 45 with a 1.8 litre engine takes about 10 to fifteen minutes to pressurise. I presume this happens when the thermostat opens.

Are you losing coolant? Is the oil frothy?

Pressure (and therefore hardness) should develop with temperature.

Four minutes at idle might be sufficient, although my 1.6 would probably take longer.

Losing coolant to oil. Was a bit brown, now very light brown (on dipstick).

So need advice as per my other thread as to which gaskets are best (MLS versus alternatives etc)

Head gasket selection depends on the height of the liners.
