Track Day Car

If you were to have a track day car, and it HAD to be an MG, what would you get? Budget less than 3000

TT MK7 exhausts for MGF and TF sold out next batch ordered. .

Neil do you mean 3000 to spend on parts for an existing car? Or to buy a car?

From my experience of track days.. You can have fun in a 500 car

All depends what you are after

Mods worth doing to any F/TF:

Track biased tyres

Best brake pads you can get

Oil cooler

CG lock for seat belt(s)

Passenger foot rest if taking passenger

Suitable fire ext

I was thinking either TF160 or ZR160

For Red19 though...If I cant get it anymore powerful without massive work.
Aha! CG lock. Great idea. I've Just gone online and bought one!
That will solve a lot of issues. Last track day I was sliding all over theplace inside the car on my sheeny shiny leather seats, so I was looking at getting a special track day seat but we'll see how the lock does. good plan.

I have also acquired a pair of 15" V spoke wheels for the rear and tyres of an equal size to the fronts hopefully to dial out some understeer and also provides a pair of tyres I can wreck at the back (Continentals) Also for Fs 16" aren't ideal apparently according to VHS. OK I have to stay with the 16s at the front to get over the big discs. So next track day should prove interesting

You seem to hear a lot from VHS, what method of communication are you using as I can never reach them on the phone and emails take ages to be answered!

ZS180-it's the best handling out of all the MG's, and the best set naturally for track work. Double wishbones all round for the win.

Individualise the spheres.. And get some custom anti roll bars on it (300 for the pair)..

That will give it better cornering..

Do you have a 2.8 steering rack. If not get one..

Adjustable shocks and set the rears bit stiffer than the front

Get some decent cut slicks..

Oil cooler for deffo though.. Otherwise you'll end up getting the oil very hot.. As you tend to rag it more on a track day

ZS180 are excellent for track days - and the ZR would be a grat choice. Loads of F/TFs on track with MGoT: great cars for track work plus the the open cockpit makes it even more fun.

All depends on what floats your boat. For me it'd be a toss between the ZS and F/TF

Your rack could be a 3.6 then.. Gulp

Turn to full lock left.. Then count how many turns to right lock..

2.4 ideal for track car.. But none ever made.. So 2.8 best option.. Don't want EPAS anyway for track car

Anti roll bars affect high speed cornering.. Andy Watson is running 24mm bars front and rear.. 80% stiffer than stock.. And individualising the spheres will help too..

All depends how much you want to do..

Poly bush is a must..

Neil the Cup cars got a number of mods to improve the handling on the track

Seam welded subframes

Solid subframe mounts

Bigger anti roll bars

Adjustable drop links

Braced shock top mounts

Individualized spheres

Better brakes

Better engines (throttle bodies would be good)

Full poly bushing

Which is why I've done the mods I've done the mods I've done on mine..

All depends how far you want to go..

They do make a good base with the tweaked suspension, torsen, close ratio box, etc. Strip it out and you've a fun little hot hatch although you'd definitely have to put a bucket seat in as the leather is pretty slidey. Plus you could do it for a lot less than 3k with the price they're at currently.

I agree with Rob, probably either a ZS with a 1.8T or an F/TF for that budget.

Bigger budget, K series Midget. Which I have.

Even bigger budget, Metro 6R4. Although you wouldn't see it on a track, only on a gravel stage where it belongs. I can dream.
