R65 Gearbox speed sensor and bottom ball joint.

My son managed to hit the speed sensor yesterday and this flew off. Will it just go back on? I've tried, but didn't want to force it too much in case it broke.

Also, the bottom ball joint nut wont go on without just turning the ball joint itself. I've tried jacking the lower arm up to force it in that way, still no joy. Last two options are try driving on it and hope it popes in or buy a new ball joint and fit the new nut.

re bottom ball joint , i use a pry bar or big stilsons to push the joint together forcing it to hold it in the cup then tighten the nut up , if thats any help to you , just watch out for the rubber on the cv joint as not to damage it depending on where you put the bar etc .
not sure about the speed sensor but i would remove the piece left in the gear box check to see if anything lines up ( goes into a slot as cant see the insides of the top piece ) if their is nothing to slot into a groove they should just push and clip back into position with each other .

Thanks guys. I guess I just need to be a bit more forceful trying to get the sensor back together then.

On other cars jacking up the bottom arm has pushed the ball joint home. I did see something on google about putting washers on first and pulling it through that way. I think that would work as the first few turns are free enough to do by finger, so if I can keep the nut on those threads by packing the nut with washers it should pull the ball joint home.

yeah i have tried that but a good 7 times out of 10 the shaft will release again ,usually just at the worst time best way i have found is with a pry bar or stilsons to hold it in position have tried the washer trick but as said it will pop out again , if you dont want to use a metal bar a piece of wood wedged in to hold it down will also do the job of holding it down.

I have the exact same problem fast guy ball joint spinning I currently have the lca on an axal stand I'm going to use a pry bar against the ball joint and lca and use a nut gun, I bent the ball joint pin with the splitter and had to cut half the thread off we'll see if this works, was only replacing abs rings and brake pads

Which is the drive? Is it the bit with a ball bearing in one side and a plastic square pin thing sticking out of the other?

Also-- how does the other bit come off. It looks lie a black nut, does it just unscrew? and if so is there anything in it that might fall out and get lost?

There were 2 other bits inside the black nut part of the sensor still attached to the box, a round bit with a square driveshaft type thing coming out of one side and a green seal,

I was wondering how the nut came off the box, did it just unscrew? It might have been easier to take that off and reassemble it all off the car. I'm off out to have a look in a second to see if I can just snap it back on as it didn't want to go the other day.

I'm going to have to unscrew the remaining bit from the gearbox. I spent another half an hour or so trying to push it on and it just won't go. I actually bent the plastic where the electrical connector fits. The engine mount is in the way to push it on easily, but I don't really want to take that off again.

What a ball ache that was. I managed to unscrew the other bit from the gearbox very easily. Even with a g clamp snapping the 2 bits back together was a pain. It then wouldn't screw back on to the box as the body would hit the gearbox mount, so I had to remove that bracket screw the sensor on and refit the bracket. Just hope the damn thing works still.

Ball joint went back on today. Packing it with washers did the trick to pull it home, then removed the washers and did the nut back up.

Todays job was to make a front offside brake pipe. The only unforeseen problem was that it looks like the original pipe had been cross threaded into the flexi hose so I need a flexi hose as the threads are knackered where the pipe connects. :(

N/S top wishbone was replaced last year. O/S was done last week.

Got the flexi hose today and fitted it. The 2 fitted brackets needed so adjustment to fit and the centre one needed swapping over from the old hose.

Brakes need bleeding a bit more by the feel of the pedal, but ran out of light today.
