ok so i got told this could be a problem with the heater matrix so i took it out, cleaned it thoroughly until it was getting hot all over and put it back in
still cold.....
thought it may be an airlock so continued to bleed system through and still nothing.... until....whilst engine was running i undid the cap to see how much pressure was in the system and low and behold... HEAT!
But when u tighten the cap back on it goes cool again, i am completely stumped...
also just tried the ATC diagnostics check and came up with no fault codes
Can you describe exactly what happens in your case. The OP's situation seems rather unusual to me and I'm wondering if your issue is exactly the same. Does the header tank cap figure in the way things work or don't work? It's a fascinating problem if it does. Which engine do you have?
I have the 2.5 V6 190. I cannot get heat from the heaters. Experience a little residual heat when the car has been running for a while. The header tank is holding the water at the correct level. Have had stat changed, water pump and cam belts done, had the heater matrix removed and flushed out. 1st frost on car took 20 mins to clear two small holes, still pretty dangerous to drive with hat, coat and gloves for me and demist is an issue. No idea what else to do. MG specialist running out of ideas too.
Assuming the engine runs at the correct temperature (near 90C using the trip screen diagnostic routine), then coolant isn't getting through the heater circuit. Since the usual suspects have been renewed, I'd say there's an airlock in the cooling system because it wasn't refilled using the correct method. This requires raising the header tank as high as possible. It can be resolved using the specified filling and bleeding proceedure set down by MGR. It's in the Haynes Manual and can be located on the forum using a keyword search. Let us know if you need help.
Thanks TC, I took the car to Lates and they removed and flushed the matrix, put the car on the T4 and ran the diagnostic, couldn't find the fault. I'm sure they bled the system and refiled using a pressure/vacuum tool. They are as puzzled as I.
Went out for a 15 minute thrash with the diagnostic setting for 7 the temp ran between 86 and 90 lowest was 82 when first started highest 90 while deceleration from 4500rpm. Highest speed was 70mph. Does this tell you anything??
It's on the low side and certainly shouldn't drop to 82C when driving. It could go that low if freewheeling downhill I guess. I'd suggest you consider the thermostat.
Turned out that I needed a new heater matrix and the water pipes on the LPG system rerouting so the heater got the hot water first and then the lpg evaporator also had to replace the radiator as there was a leak where hose clips were rubbing against it. All sorted now.
