am i doing sth wrong, or mine is faulty../? :(

do you have a rover specific plug or you use the obd2 one?

mine doesn't have rover specific plug..i connected obd2, never started.. :(

i then tsted it on familys Polo it blinked for a while, then it started..seemed.. ok..

i unplugged it, and replugged it to confirm that it would start again, but it wouldn't start..

shall i think of replacing it??

You use the OBD2 one even for OBD1 cars.

Worked fine on mine first time. Plug in first and then turn on ignition to 2 for historic faults or 3 (ie start) for live data.

Make sure plug fully in both ends. There is a right way up.

it worked only one time on family's Polo,
and never turned on since then.. :(

also the only time that turned on, the screen blinked for a while, which didnt seem normal..

either there is problem with the wires, or with the tool itself..
Did you use the VW designated lead or the designated OBD2 for the Polo?

Have you tried the unit on another type of car other than MG and Polo?

Have you checked the instructions ??

There was something I spotted in the VAG bit about checking voltage on one of the pins before connecting unit.

I've used it on the ZS as well as the F, used it to swop ecu's over on the ZS today and it was fantastic to be able to do what only garages can normally do for you.

Good point. If this is the problem it is terminal to the unit I believe.

The unit is bloody fantastic especially as I have a OBD1 unit to read. Alot of fun when it is streaming live data.

Polo is 2002 so it is OBD2 compliant, didn't need to use the vagcom which i think refers to older models..

also as technozen told me (if i understood correctly) if i connected just the lighter plug without the obd interface to the car, shouldn't that power up the device..??
if so, mine didn't..!!!

checked it again with Rover, no response at all, although the red light on the wire turns on, which means that it gets powered, the lcd screen doesn't get on

i can't understand what i could be doing wrong..

also there were no instructions with it.. :S

mine didn't come with the case, or with a cd..

also just to make sure.. a couple of questions..

a) you use the obd2 cable, correct? i don't have any obd1/eobd cable..

b) if you connect it only to the lighter power supply but not in the obd2 does it power on? or not?

c) today, a couple of times, the lcd did power on, but no display..no text no nothing..only the light came on..and that was all..

also tested it on a freelander - nothing
and on a rover 75 - still nothing..

yes, tried it on my Rover while driving.. (when i had to stop at a traffic light i plugged the tool..)
2-3 times, lcd power up but no indications.. repeated this step, but nothing..more than turning lcd on sometimes, and other not even that..

what is that white cap that looks like a cap?

@Julian, did that mate several times (checking ribbon cables), but nothing changed.. :(

here is a video on the Polo (because supplier requested to shoot one)

Code:
https://rapidshare.com/files/2577747603/video1.wmv
1. For whatever reason I cannot access the video (edit I now have seen it).

OK - having reviewed the video the Golf OPD connection looks very hit and miss (dangling on its wires).

I would:

Try on another car (preferably one where wires are not dangling!)
Plug in the OBD connector into the car connector FIRST and then the other end into the Reader SECOND
Ignition must be turned on (it will not work otherwise)
Press one of the buttons on the reader. Try all of them if necessary
After 5 to 10 seconds or so you should get the first screen

2. It could be the Pin 1 / Pin 3 mentioned earlier could have caused the issue that you have in the unit. The chip may be blown as a result which would mean a new unit.

3. I wonder whether the supplier can email you the firmware for uploading into the unit (this may not be possible for them or you to do). They should also send you the mini cd.

4. I suspect you may have to return the unit to the supplier and get a new one but the fact the screen sometimes `lights up`may be good sign.

All I can say is that the unit is very good so do not give up!

the guy, saw the videos, and admitted that sth doesn't look right, so he kindly asked to send the unit back for checking..
i agreed that i will do so, since i believe as well, that this is a very nice tool, no matter if i just got unlucky, i just asked him for a favor, if he could forwasrd me a new unit, by the time, it will be confirm that i have dispatched the "faulty" one and supply trackiung number..

i hope that he will accept it, although i m pretty confident that i don't stand many chances for this..but i would like to get over with it as soon as possible..

I got mine from:

Cost circa US$160 including postage plus aluminium case ($20).Comes from HK.

I purchased from the below via AliExpress and took 2 weeks to arrive from order date.

HAOSUTONG CO. LIMITED
C/O YFHEX
2RD INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT
HONG KONG,
HK

I did contact the guy mentioned above in China. Got a price but no followup on sending invoice / payment details so forced to with
HAOSUTONG CO. LIMITED. Easy to order, safe payment as payment not released to supplier until receipt of delivery confirmed.

Very pleased with the kit and excellent value (and does what it says on the box).
