Buying a catch tank to save inlet manifold....

To save my VIS motors and inlet manifold, i'm buying an oil catch tank. Where is the best place to buy one? Best makes? How much?

Any advice on fitment would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

There's lots of info on this on the XPower Forums. It seems owners have used at least three different locations for fitment. I think the best one is just to the left of the battery. Wherever it goes fitment only takes half an hour or so.

I've followed a few on ebay recently. They vary from around £35 to £65 (for a natty looking carbon job).

When i pulled my VIS motors off they were covered in oil and apparently this oil becomes abrasive to the control rod within the inlet manifold wearing it out. A new inlet manifold is £500 plus so i would say £35 on a catch tank to stop this happening would be money well spent. Especially if you have just brought a new one.

Catch Tanks

I have to ask what does this actually do? I have 75000 miles on my clock and the car appears to perform as if it was new. I clean out the air filter case of a small oil residue about 2x per year but there is a drain hole at the bottom of this anyway. It is just that it eventually makes a mess on the path if I don't. My asking is genuine as I do not appear to have any problems. Foot down and away it goes.
Can someone explain the symptoms?

Mine is on 82k and as said drives perfect but in the service history it has already had the inlet changed once.

Its off at the moment and I could not beleive the amount of oil in it and the throttle body, oil is no good for power since it dilutes the octane value of the fuel so even if it cures this a bit its worth it and I hope that by fitting the catch tanks I will never have problems again.

I'm going to fit 2, one where most seam to fit them on the main breather into the inlet and another on the oil blow off to the throttle body. Bought one on ebay, when it arrives I will buy another to match and I'm going to fit them both where the air box wont be going back.

Just to update, my car does run fine and has no rattles but the balance valve is full of oil and the motor runs at about a quater the speed it should (compared to the power valve motor that is) and the balance valve has both micro switches kaput, no oil in it but one switch has come away from the PCB so the cam wheel cannot depress it and the other has a dry joint that has cracked away.

Car will go like a rocket when its back together and the catch tank is a must in my eyes, DC motors are not designed to be bathed in oil!

The catch tank is a great mod and will help prolong the life of both vis and plenum. Mine has been on for a year now and been emptied twice with clean oil being caught. As mentioned the oil contaminates the vis units but worse still aggravates the grease used on the actuator arm assembly eventually turning this into a grinding paste. The quality of the arm is very poor in terms of build tolerance, some cars fare better than others, but mine was out by 1.5mm or more on pitch from what I can remember.

The sockets wear out and the balls of the butterfly jump out, hence the rattle, the fit being a press type doesn't help when the pitch is so far out. In time they separate due to wear as below.

I've got a BRAND NEW manifold to put on mine :) But wanted to sell my one on if it was ok :) I think if you can get one at the right price, maybe get one as spare? Dont think there would be limited supply BUT there are a bit on the expensive side. Theres one on ebay at the min, think its at £125? or was last time i looked :)

Right, was gonna start it today but its just NOT stopped snowing. I went out this morning, got me some pipe for me catch tank and some carb cleaner. Oh, and some nice warm working gloves as im sick of the latex ones as me hands are freezin :-(

OK, so, my catch tank arrived this morning :)

£23 delivered off good old ebay :) Spent a few quid on fuel hose as theres not quite enough here.

So, fingers crossed tomorrow and ill get me groove on :)

Had a quick look under the bay earlier today and there doesnt seem like a lot of places to mount it, with the original airbox in the way. It was a quick look mind you, but there was a bit of room upon the bulkhead, so it may end up there-not sure yet :)

Lets hope it dries up tomorrow and ill post pics up of me doin me VIS valves, manifold and me catch tank :) Gutted i couldnt do it today :-(
