Car repair worth it

Due to the process of moving decided to take car to my local rover expert. Have been told noise is from gearbox bearings and they need to replace mainshaft and counter shaft bearings total cost aprox £500 to £515 with the possibility that clutch may need replacing at £105, total cost around £620.00 :cus::cus::cus:

The noise has been on the car for aprox 3000 miles, I'm in two minds whether to cut my losses and get rid of and purchase a replacement car of around £2,000 to £3,000 bearing in mind the current car has 120,000 miles onit and I expect to do an average of 13,000 per year for the foreseable future.

Need to call garage back by 4:30 today

Your help would be appreciated

I know it's not quite the same but:

I got a PG1 'box from ebay for £33. Full replacement bearing set is around £100 I believe. Max 3 hours labour to replace all the bearings plus about 3 hours to remove and refit the box. (Although I have known it to be done in 22 minutes :yikes: )

That gets a reconditioned 'box in my car for about £350.

You don't say what gearbox you have, but I'm assuming it's an R65 manual 'box. Should get one for less than £50. If you fit it as is, you should be looking at around £150. So £200 to have a different 'box put in.

Don't pay more than £100 on top to have the clutch changed as well.

I know it's 2 hours too late, and I'm being lazy by not looking at what noise you have, but it wouldn't happen to be a sorta high pitched whine that increases with engine speed?

I had that on my old 214. Everyone was telling me the input shaft bearings had gone, or the clutch release bearing had gone.

Some bright spark happened to mention that even if the power steering fluid gets a little low, that it makes a noise.

I was sceptical but I tried anyway and it went! Saved myself a pretty packet there!

Don't worry about being late, have decided to collect car from garage and have got quote from somewhere else at £250 + VAT excluding clutch, a bit easier to to deal with than £550 incl vat.

Noise is a bit like the noise a turbo makes with the noise you get if you put a piece of plastic between the spokes of a bike.

Unfortunatly power streering level is up to max so not that
