Oil Change on diesel 75

Hi everyone,
I phoned National Tyres this afternoon here in Nottingham to arrange for an oil/filter change for my 75 diesel only to be told that they charge 14.00 pounds for removing the undertray, and that the total cost will be 35.00 for 5liters of Visco 7000 full synthetic, plus an extra 10.00 pounds if more is needed ( I told them the car requires almost 7 liters), they finally quoted 45.00 pounds.
I spoke to the manager and informed him that if booked online the total cost is in fact less than 24.00 pounds, he said that he was not aware of this and that he was not able to view their web site but if I took a printout he will be able to do it.
Do you think I should trust them to do a good job or go elsewhere?

I echo Simonarius post. My old mechanic who used to service my old 330d swore by these devices, not least because it meant he could do twice the amount of oil changes on a car in a day than using the old method.

Also, as above, I was ridiculed when I asked so called 'motors experts' about these devices saying they wouldn't get all the oil out. No you're right, they won't, but nor will draining it from the sump plug, it sits in the galleries and wouldn't come out unless the oil pressure was high!

As I do 1000 miles a week and change my oil at every 7-10k, this is going to be a life saver, and for £30 - you'd be mad not to.

I'll plan to do my oil change in a weeks time so I'll whip up some photos then.

Pela Pump

I see you list Poole Dorset. I am sure you can easily find a marine (chandler) shop in your area.
Nauticalia is in Middlesex, have a look where cdet are, they may well be in your neck of the woods. Or look at Screwfix.com/tradecounters. They may have a branch near you (they have just opened here in Cambridge so anything is possible !)

I have been paying through the nose for oil changes as I did not have the ways and means with the 75 to do them myself, and like most of you I think 15.000 to long between oil changes.

This thread has shown me how I can go back to doing them myself, I am glad I joined this group you are all obviously unsung geniuses.

One question what tool do I need to get the filter out of a 2.0 CDTi 02 model?

I use the Millers fully synthetic Diesel engine oil..
Can I tell you a quick true story???
I used to own a VW Golf Diesel..I always did "secret" intermediate oil/filter changes along with the official dealer service as the car was under warranty at that time.
I took my car to the main VW dealer for its service .. When I arrived at the service reception I asked the service manager if I could have my own oil put in.. The chap said "what is it you have"?
I showed him the Millers fully synthetic and he read the spec and said "Yeah thats fine"..
I borrowed a courtesy car for a few hours and then went back to pick my car up at about 5.30pm (just before they closed). I paid and drove off. I had traveled about half a mile when I thought to myself the engine seemed rough and not as smooth as it was. I immediately turned around and went back to the dealers just as they were closing.
I collared the service manager and asked "Did you put the millers oil in I gave you"?
He said "wait a minute".. He disappeared into the workshop and came out holding up the full unused can of millers oil.
He looked very sheepish and apologized profusely.. He said that the mechanic had "Gone into auto pilot" and put the VW oil in without thinking.
He gave me a refund for the VW oil he had put in and I took my Millers home with me as they were closing.
The point I am making with this story is that the engine ran smoother on the Old Millers that was due for renewal than it did on the new VW oil.

This incident is what prompted me to go in search of an easier way to drain the engines oil.
I have used the "PELA" siphon pump on many, many cars now.
There is a down side to owning the suction device..
Your mates will be queuing up for there oil to be changed.
You have been warned !

Sorry to resurrect an old post, does anyone have the part number for the sump nut and washer for a 75 diesel?

Does it need replacing every time?

Dixon, I don't have the part number but the washer should be replaced but not the sump plug. On saying that though, I don't replace the washer every time I do an oil change and as long as there's no leake then it's OK.

The reason I haven't done my oil changes for the last 15 yrs is because my driveway is pretty steep. I was wondering if I got a Pela pump, which way would be best to park the car to drain it, facing uphill or down, this of course assuming it is possible to do when on an un-level surface.

Did mine the other day too.

Can I just say here and now that the exact capacity of the CDT/CDTi is 6.7 litres. If you are putting "exactly 6" in you are in for some very large repair bills soon as the car uses around 0.7 to 1l of oil every 10-12k miles.

Its a doddle to do and takes around 30 minutes from raising the jack to lowering again.

You guys ARE aware that the BMW diesel engine in the 75 has to be run on 5w/40 Fully synthetic oil aren't you?

Anyone quoting less than £20 for 4.5L of oil is talking about semi synthetic oils which are at best 10w/40 which aren't suitable for this engine.

A decent fully syth 5w/40 is at least £25 if not more like £30.

Magnatec

Don't know if anything has changed but was told a long time ago that Magnatec contains only a small proportion of synthetic though whether it is any worse than many other semi synthetics I don't know.
Changed regularly though, I doubt it greatly affects rate of engine wear.
My (simple) understanding of synthetics is, that with normal running, it is almost indestructable, and if not has a life far in excess of mineral oil. It is changed more to do with contamination than loss of lubricity.
When I ran Mercedes the mechanic told me that some business users filled with Mobil 1 at first oil change and not again till disposal of the car or, 100,000 miles.
It is probably the 'king' of synthetics which is partly reflected in the price

I got myself a PELA 6000 too. This was following the advice of Simonarius. Now i was a complete novice and duffa when it came to cars but it was a doddle. I got mine from here.

http://www.seamarknunn.com/catalog/items/item439.htm

You can get next day delivery too. For sevicing two cars it saves a good few quid. I have a sloping driveway too evohicks so i move it to the road whils doing the change. I am in a small cul-de-sac though.

As a query to what forehead says about only 5w/40 oil should be used the hand book states 10w/40 and so do most of the guys on here. I used Millers XFE which is 10w/40.

Changed the oil with the suction pump today, took the sump plug after pumping the last dregs out and about 4 drips came out about 2 seconds apart, very immpressed had to empty it halfway though due to the 5 litre capacity.
Also drained about a litre of rain water out the front bulkhead, stuck it down the grill where you fill the brake fluid, my drains are clear but hadn't moved since the lastest deluge.
