:slap:my 214 has failed its mot on a few items one of which is rear parking brake efficiency below requirments. i have sorted most of the problems myself thanks to all your help but i cannot remove the rear brake drum to have a look inside. i had trouble gettin the screws out but got em eventually but the drum will not budge. i have tried using a screwdriver through the hole in the back plate but not really sure what i should be doing. any help would be great.

sounds like the drum is seized onto the shoes. Try pulling on the handbrake hard then release it. assuming the retaining screws are out on the face of the drum, give the drum a few hard smacks with a wooden mallet or if you have to a steel one, it should free off the shoes from the drums. It is not uncommon for this to happen.

it should be about a 32mm, just get a socket and a bar to get it off. when its off be carefull as the wheel bearings may fall out, the last thing you want is dirt in them. also when you have done this if the drums dont just pull off you will have to smack them off with a hammer, be carefull though as the lip on the inner edge of the drum can sometimes pull off all the inner workings, and if you dont no how they go back it can be a nightmare. if you need anymore help just ask . gaz

You don't have to remove the hub nut on these, just undo the two screws on the drum centre , if they're too badly wrecked after, you don't need to replace them, they're not really necessary

If the drum won't budge (assuming you've released the handbrake before you try to remove it!) then some judicious levering at various opposite sides of the drum (eg nine o'clock and three o'clock) will get it off eventually. If the handbrake cable has been adjusted too tightly, this may also be holding the shoes close to the drum, back the adjuster off in the rear of the centre console if that's the case.

The reason why you're probably experiencing difficulty is due to the way the drum wears, it's a not a fault, all that happens is the outer edge of the drum doesn't get any contact with the linings, and eventually over the miles a slight 'lip' developes. as you try to pull the drum off, the linings catch on this 'lip', this is what makes removing the drum so difficult, so much more so on vehicles with auto adjusters within the rear drums. Removing the centre hub nut will not help with the linings catching the drum.
