thursday i cleaned my spark plugs, topped up on water and sprayed wd40 to some components in my engine. it worked perfectly fine after that and it did friday morning on the way to work. But when i went from work to college around 10.30am my car started to make popping noises like popcorn and gutter. When i got home me and my mate looked at the car, he said it sounds like the air intake is slightly blocked so cleaned that out, he then said he could notice a bit petrol underneath my air filter (after it was taken out to clean) we both was confused how it got there. any how still no luck still got the popcorn noise. cant seem to find any holes or leaks in my exhaust.

please help, mot due nxt month 20th!!

cheers

I think thats called 'pinking' luckily not had it on my own car but my friends corsa used to do it.

pinking is pre detonation. i dont think its that cos its injected

when you rev it and then come off the throttle does it do it then??

it could just be unburnt fuel ingiting in the exhaust, if it is dont worry but make sure your air filter isnt blocked cos that might cause unburnt fuel

i believe it is due to a dodgy spark plug or ht lead. saturday morning took the plugs out checked them and they looked fine reinserted them, sprayed ht leads with wd40 and it ran fine on the way down to bristol. parked up and went back out 30mins later started doing it again guttering and popping noise. This morning sprayed leads and crimped them tighter to the plugs worked fine. Got 15 miles from my house tempery lost of power then kicked in and my exhusht sounded like my girlfriends stepdad's VW trekker and also sounded like a VW bettle ( which i liked the sound off). 15mins ago i sprayed the first two ht leads and ran fine. so next week when i get paid im off to get new plugs and leads. fingers crossed that sorts the god damn problem.

also the noise happens wether i rev it or not. could be idle and it would do it.

Thank you all for your replys!!

Yeah, the points are copper/brass, and they oxidise, and if your engine is running slightly off they will go black/white and reduce the strength of the spark, give them a clean with some light sand paper, also check your rotor arm, then replace the plugs and leads, job done.
