Radio Security Code

Whern I bought my car recently there was no spare key or radio security code. I've fixed the matter of the spare key but now comes the radio security code. I've seen reference on ebay to getting the code for a small payment. Is this reliable?

I've heard of one radio that had the code written on the back of the unit. Anyone know if this was common in Oz? Of course I don't want to disconnect the battery to find out, nor do I particularly want to try and get at the radio. Any suggestions/comments?

When I replaced my alternator I was forced to deal with the security whether I liked it or not.

First I rang the local BMW dealer who are service agents for Rover hoping they'd have the code on record. They didn't, but said to try Roverland in Auckland - the place my car was originally purchased from. Fortunately they had the security code on record otherwise it would've cost me a $40 fee for them to retrieve it.

I haven't taken out my stereo unit (yet), so wouldn't know if the code is written on the back, but it seems unlike.

I have the Philips Harmony unit, which is mediocre & have plans to either replace it with the Symphony unit or get a new head unit altogether.

as far as I know ,. pre facelift cars didn't require a code, and it's said codes are written on the side of the unit in any case....if you can whip it out.
The Owners Manual (2001 ed for Oz) talks about the code so I presume they do have it. I just rang Zagame. Robert there said trhat if it is an integrated unit rather than just a radio/CD in the dash, it won't have a code because it's no use to anyone else (unless they've a Rover I guess). I've the Symphony unit (ie radio/cassette with CD in glovebox, no sat/nav). I thought I'd check to see if there was a code by following the procedure to deactivate. (Hold down the tune search up control while switching the unit on with the push switch/volume control). I got "Code On" in the display. Then I got the CODE request but not knowing the code I couldn't input it so I'm now dead.
That proves there is a Code, I'd say!

BTW, you can get the serial number of your radio without taking it out by playing about with the controls. I can advise how to do it if anyone wants to know.

iirc Harmony and Symphony units will have been shipped with codes, the hi line Sat Nav units weren't.

Codes are all available from a dealer. XPart now operate an email radio code notification system so you should be able to get it easily enough. Alternatively there are plenty of people on ebay who say they can do it fro you.

For a fee. The official Rover dealer in Auckland was going to charge me, if it weren't for the fact my car is NZ new & on record.

Which brings me to another point; many of the 75s in NZ are Jap/Singapore import so won't be on record at any dealer.

It almost seems pointless to put a code on the Harmony and Symphony units, as they aren't the best sound systems around & they only work in Rover 75s. And Rover 75 owners aren't the type to break into other 75s just to get an upgrade...:=p:.

Yep, my radio was dead. I paid my £4.99 on ebay and got my code (checking first that he had it). Worked like a charm.

I wonder if this will become an issue in years to come for owners of Rovers as the brand and dealer support slips into the past.?
If the new MG company still provides technical support all well and good but in places like Oz it could get difficult. Really, there should have been the codes written into the customer service books that came with the cars.
