Took me alloy wheels off today to have a go at fitting mg zr side skirts(didnt go well).
I noticed there seems a lot of like think black oil round the inside of my alloy wheel. I then looked behind the wheel hub to find the front passengerside cv boot gator has split and obv lost most of its oil. Want to get this fixed asap to avoid problems with the actually CV joint , not noise of symptoms atm
How much should a garage charge to fix this , my freind reckons about £50 all in.
for £20 at a motor factor you can get a split gaitor kit with adhesive and grease with 2 new clamps. takes about 10 mins. just cut the old one off, pack the joint with grease and wrap the new one on
Ok i think for ease and obv a perminate fix( as im not mechanicaly minded) should be about to get for £50 or less. Guy im gonna try is a small independant garage since like the 1980s , he did my headgaskt on my r200 last 18k miles before i sold it did the job for £375 all in. So guess he may be ok
If you could do it yourself, you can buy whole joints plus the gaitor etc for less than 20 pounds and you have got rid of the old rusty abs ring into the bargain
Ahhh never mind (always looking for new members ) good luck with the joint shouldnt be much at most decent garages and if you feel confident just a couple of big nut and a lever to get the hub away.
Any have a fitting guild for summin for the gautior , bought a haynes manual. Says about removing the drive shaft ect this sound right? Bought the boot kit and ball joint splitter.
Getting dad to do it whos mechanical knowledge is he has built a kit car
Study chapter 8 (driveshafts ) and chapter 10 (suspension and steering). If you also look at your car whilst reading them it will all become clear.
Not a difficult job but make sure the car is very well supported.
Good luck and come back to us if you have any problems.
Thanks Ricky, Yepo gonna be putting it up on axle times, just gotta wait till dad got some time. Do we have to remove the driveshaft and ie get anothe gatior. Or does the CV joint remove easy enough
Yes, I agree with Stu. As you have blown the gaitor you have also thrown the grease from the CV so it might be damaged through lack of grease.
Change it regardless.
You do not need to remove the whole shaft - just the hub off the shaft and then the outer CV joint off the shaft.
New gaitor then new CV joint then grease then secure gaitor and assemble hub. Job done.
When my passenger side cv boot split on my bubble i managed to get a cv boot kit for £7.50 to £8 i cant remember how much exactaly but got my gf's bro to do it as he a mechanic :broon:
