HI..my cluch is warn little travel, hard pedal but working fine otherwise. I guess because of the 140k miles she has done its due for replacing.

I have got a couple of prices and their around the 400 mark but one stated that the fly wheel should also be changed at teh same time as on this model/year its a dual mask fly wheel (what ever that is) please can some one advise me on weather this is correct.

He also stated that the hydrolic cyclyder may need changing also (known to be bad when cluch is replaced)

The rover 75 is on a 03 plate 2lt DT
any advise would be welcomed

any one undertaken this them selves or no a cheaper place i can go

Clutch

Hi there. You have done well if the car has done 104,000 without a change.
It is about a 5 hour job to remove & replace Gear box.
Check what make of clutch he intends fitting / where it's coming from. If not Rover I personally would only fit Borg & Beck but Quinton Hazel offer a lifetime warranty on their clutches if done by a garage signed up to their scheme.
Borg & Beck clutch kit (cluth plate + pressure plate) £99
Slave cylinder about £135 (both are inside bell housing & must be replace together.
It is only on removal of old clutch that inspection of the Dual Mass Flyweel can occur and an assesment made of condition. It is only rarely that this also needs replacement. It is usually bad scoring from the worn down rivets of the clutch plate that determines this.
Cost is £275.
It seems to be a fact that on replacing clutch, the master cylinder often fails (on top of the clutch pedal, inside car).
This also costs about £135.

It's standard practice to replace the hydraulic slave cylinder whenever the clutch is replaced because they are a known weak point and there's a lot of dismantling involved. Often the master cylinder is replaced as well. A new hydraulic system costs around £100 in total. The dual mass flywheel is not 'automatically' replaced any more than is the flywheel of any other car. It depends on the state of the integral bearings and the condition of the friction face. Garages with experience servicing these cars should know the criteria, which are provided by the DMF manufacturer. Other places simply hedge their bets and assume it needs a new flywheel anyway. At £400 a shot, it's worth having expert opinions rather than blind guesses. At 140K miles, there's a fair probability it will need doing. Just make sure you see the old one of you have to pay for one!

DMFlywheel

The LUK tech sheet says there should be no more than 25-30mm of free movement between the 2 masses.
If thats ok then, as above, it depends on condition of friction face (ie scored by rivets from worn clutch plate)
Not many members have had to replace the DMF.

Rover 75 clutch

This interests me

I have a 2.5 petrol manual, only 88,OOO kms, and have a lot of free play on the clutch pedal, and take up right from the floor. And pretty heavy too. Happened virtually over a day or so. Car bought new, careful driver

Is the clutch adjustable? Could it be worn out at this mileage? Where can I find the master cylinder to check the fluid level? Handbook says nothing about clutch

Ta for any advice. Cricket going well for Oz!

Nothing on the clutch is adjustable.
The master cyl. is at top of clutch pedal inside car and is difficult to see. Members have on occasion refilled the resevoir (Syringe & flex pipe or similar) re-bled and restored function but I think this has been short lived in most cases especially where the slave (inside the bell housing) hasn't been renewed.

75 clutch replacement

Hi...thanks for all your replys, looks like i'm going to have to dig deep and get the complete job done - the fly wheel hopefully.

will try and see if they let me supply parts as much cheaper then going through them and like the info on the part manufatcutres my local spare parts supply the LUK which according to the coments seem to be the best option (not remanufactured parts).

Will enquire what manufactured part teh garage will supply.

but if any one has had theirs replaced in the Peterborough/Huntingdon area please let me know where if recomended (and cost)

again thanks to you all

I've been quoted £1,200 worse case scenario to have fly and clutch replaced. Cars only done 35k - can a clutch go at any time or is there a rough bench mark of miles for clutch/flywheel before it would need replaced?

Long story short, my head gasket has gone on my 03 plate 75 tourer and the garage is doing it under the extended warranty i got but they said they looked at the brakes, handbrake, etc while it was in and noticed a few things needed done. TBH i think they are taking the pi$$ hence asking if it sounds about right it may need replaced.

I posted this last month:

Just had my master/slave go at 115,000miles (started by difficulty of getting into 2nd gear and then foot to floor the following day). Decided to bite the bullet and get the clutch changed at the same time - the cost £430+VAT all in by JK Mechanicals in Brackley.
Fortunately, the DMF was in good condition (Phew!).

Bon Chance

Flyer

i,m startin to think your a jammy git gaz , would i be right ????? flyer/:jealous:
I hope so! Although reading about my flexi-pipe and cat change by Hi-Q at £350ish a couple of years ago - I've just read that someone bought one for £92 from Hi-Q and fitted it himself :-(

I guess "swings and roundabouts" come to mind...:s2h: ...the Zed is my 4th consecutive MGR car (214i, 416i, ZR & ZT) and I'm starting to get used to this philosophy!

Replacing the clutch without including a new slave cylinder is generally seen as false economy because of the high cost of dismantling. The Freelander diesel slave fits this engine (and every other engine actually) and is less than half the price of the MGR one. It will also last MUCH longer.

CDT Clutch

The gearchange on the wife's 75 CDT, 02 with 80k miles, was becoming really difficult and had a lot of play on the pedal. So decided that a complete replacement was the best long term option including the clutch, slave and master cylinder. Work carried out last week by BS Motors of Sandy, Befordshire for £725 all inclusive using genuine parts. They also offered an alternative using pattern parts for £695 but given the difference....

Just thought I would mention this as other quotes ranged upto £1200 for the same set of parts and replacement.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the service and they are only 5 miles from the Shuttleworth collection - an excellent place to be stranded without ones own car!
