Rover 25 Key Fob FAQ

Vehicles fitted with the Lucas 3TXA, Lucas 3TXB, Lucas 17TN remote key fob (this number is on the back of the key fob).

Rover 25

Rover or Honda petrol engines, Peugeot or Rover Diesel engines.
Has your key fob stopped working?

If your key fob has just stopped working try this:
1. Unlock your vehicle with the key in the drivers door lock, do not open the door.
2. Press the right hand button lock button (the button with the padlock symbol or the dimpled button) on the key fob 4 to 8 times.
If the above fails try this:
1. Open the key fob
2. Remove the battery
3. Press any button 10 ten times, and the same with the other button
4. Refit the battery or a new battery
5. Unlock the vehicle with the key in the drivers door lock, do not open the door
6. Press the right hand button lock button (the button with the padlock symbol or the dimpled button) on the key fob 4 to 8 times
The Rover 25 Immobiliser system is very reliable, the ECU control rarely fails, if your vehicle will not start it is probably due to the remote key fob. You may have to perform the above sequence if your vehicles battery has gone flat or it is disconnected. If all the above fails you have the EKA code.
The Rover 25 remote key fob uses a rolling code system. When you press the key fob, the code changes every time, and the alarm box in your vehicle also changes its code to match with the key fob. This is a great antitheft system but sometimes the key fob and alarm box codes do not match and the system will not operate.
The most common cause for this is pressing the buttons on the key fob away from the vehicle, the key fob code moves on but the alarm box on the vehicle does not, so the two codes do not match. The key fobs and the ECU control box receiver on your vehicle have a clock, this clock also moves the code even if the key fob is not used.
Abbreviations

•ECU - Electronic control unit, the box which controls the alarm, immobiliser and usually the central locking fitted to your vehicle, the immobiliser ECU is a separate unit under the dashboard.
•EKA - Emergency key access, this number has no connection to the remote key fob.
•MHZ - megahertz (frequency number).
•ARMED - this is when you have locked your vehicle with the key fob, the alarm system is active and the immobiliser is on.
•DISARMED - this is when you have unlocked your vehicle with the key fob, the alarm system is not active and the immobiliser is off.

The image on the right is the inside of the key fob, the most common problem when the key fob fails is the component circled. Very carefully check to see if the 2 wire legs are attached to the component and the circuit board.
Programming Lucas Key Fobs

When programming new key fobs, all key fobs are automatically erased from the ECU control box fitted to the vehicle. This is done because if you have lost a key fob or had a key fob stolen, the lost or stolen key fob will no longer work on your vehicle. At the time of programming all key fobs you need to work with the vehicle must be programmed.
The Rover 25 immobiliser system can have up to 4 key fobs programmed.
At Remote key Ltd if a new alarm ECU control box or a new engine management ECU control box is required, they will need programming together before your vehicle will start. At Remote key Ltd we can carry out all the programming required, all this can be done on or off the vehicle.
Range/Distance Problems

Does you key fob not operate very far from your vehicle?
This can be caused by many factors. As we use more wireless electronic products, the radio waves interfere with each other and this is the most common problem when your remote key fob loses its range from your vehicle.
Remember!!!
Your Rover 25 relies on the remote key fob to start, get a spare. The remote key fobs get a hard life, they get dropped, damp, wet, hot, cold, we sit on them, when the remote will not operate, the problem will probably be the remote key fob.
N.B.
Rover 25 remote key fobs are sometimes reffered to as Rover 25 plips, Rover 25 zappers, remotes, remote plips or remote zappers.
All of these common phrases can be used to describe a Rover 25 remote key fob.

The system you mention above, is jsut re-synchronising the fobs with the ECU when they are already matched. When I did mine, there is no need to put the key in the lock or anything. All I did was press the buttons on the fob in the way you described and it worked.
The methods needs to be used after fitting a new battery. Nice that your helping but its a bit long winded.

The Rover fobs also have a crap wireless distance for remote locking and unlocking so unfortunately this cant be changed.

re the range of the remotes, try putting the remote against your head when pressing it extends the range a fair way believe it or not.

apparently the brain somehow reflects the signal and increases it or so i;m told but i think it's more likely that the density of bone in the skull reflects the signal and some how concentrates it.

try it though it really does work.

 Hi David, it would probably be a better idea to post your problem in a new thread rather than ressurect an unrelated one from such a long while ago.

I'm also having a problem with my remote, except I can unlock the door and operate the ignition with the key. I just can't operate the locking mechanism with the remote. It failed when I left the car after a journey, so I was unable to lock it - at a guess I'd say the immobiliser is not activated, which is why I can still start the engine.

I have tried the procedure described above - removed the battery, pressed both buttons ten times, replaced the battery, unlocked the door and pressed the 'lock' button several times, and it made no difference.

Any advice? While I can still use the car, I'd really like the remote (and the alarm and immobiliser) to work. Is it possible that the mechanism itself is faulty and not the fob? I also noticed that turning the key only unlocks the driver's door and not the passenger door, if that's of any significance.

eta: Never mind, I've fixed it...turns out it wasn't the fob but the fuse for the central locking system that had gone...nothing to see here, move along. :)

Old thread I know but had same problem and I fixed my rover 25 keyfob by inspecting the solder connections on the keyfob board. I spotted the 3 battery cage joint were cracked on the cage side and also - probably more significantly one of the legs on the large round stainless steel component on the battery side had a cracked solder joint on the non-battery side. A dab with a soldering iron on each cracked joint and it was fixed.

My symptoms were:
have not been able to lock the car with the keyfob for ages.
range when unlocking was very poor
multiple presses needed to unlock and finally, when the wife needed to use the car for a couple of days it failed completely - boy did I hear about that - repeatedly.

I can now lock and unlock with the keyfob and the range isn't too bad either!

i should thank http://www.remotekey.co.uk/key-fob-reconditioning/ as the notes on re-soldering connections on that page got me looking in that direction .

My remote on Sky+ stopped working so i picked up the Sky box and stood outside with it on my head. Guess what it worked! thats because my brain sent a signal via the dish then to the remote and the box, then to tv finally changing the channel. All well and good i hear you say and it does work, but unfortunatly ive had to tape the sky box to my head permanently to ensure i get a brilliant signal via my electronic transmitter of a brain. I suffer quite alot with headaches though as i have 3 young children whom like to switch the channels over. Steven Hawking eat your heart out!. When i go out for a night out or go to a wedding etc i just buy a big hat or a wig. This is to cover up the sky+ box. Eh Moggyman :p
