Facelifted MG GT?

Contrary to the Thai based web site stating that the car is the soon to be released MG7, it looks like SAIC possibly have already got a facelifted version of the the MG GT in the works as the alloy wheels are the giveaway:

SAIC could be going for the big front grille look like they have for the "ZS" SUV as unlike VW there does not seem to be any cohesion for the front face of each model that SAIC produce.

Picture of the current MG GT as a comparison:

The bonnet is completely wrong for the MG GT.

I would say it is either another car aka MG 7 or a revised 6 they are working on possibly.

Looks more like a 6 bonnet to me.

Looks a bit big to be the GT and the tail looks too long. Probably a new generation MG6 as one of those is now overdue?

Just had a closer look at the front bumper of the test car and noticed that the front overhang is longer than the GT model so it probably is a new MG6 or 7 underneath there.

Aren't the new MG models being developed using the GM Epsilon platform?

There seems to be a lack of information from the usual Chinese car websites about this car.

Cheers..

Found some more pictures from the same batch on a Chinese website:

I wonder if they are going for the split grille like this rendering?

MG GT and MG 6 are quite close in size

Interestingly both the MG GT and the MG 6 are quite close in size though the longer wheelbase on the MG 6 as well as the all round independent suspension probably means it's a more comfortable ride.

You would like to think it's a new 6 underneath there, but it seems to be a saloon, and we know the 6 Saloon fared worse than the fastback here.

But in the announcement of the BTCC 3 year deal there was mention of a new chassis within the next 3 years, so maybe that might give a clue to this being a new 6 or 7?

Could of course be complete supposition though.

I wouldn't get too excited, hasn't Matthew Cheyne or someone else said that the MG6 replacement won't be sold in the UK due to them changing focus to SUVs? And who knows what the new car looks like under that disguise?

Yes, I suspect a new MG6 will be subtantially larger to leave room for the GT and probably replace the MG7 as well. As for it being a saloon I'm fairly sure that the Chinese market has a strong preference for these over liftbacks?

The Chinese market tends to favour 3 box rather than hatchback because they like the size and strength as there is no gaping hole in the back of the car for the placement of the hatch.

I think that most of the rest of Europe like 3 box as well hence Vauxhall creating the Belmont and Ford the Orion.

This was reported earlier in the year with regards to the BTCC -

'The team will run an updated MG6 model at some point in the next three years, when the road-going counterpart is also given a refreshed look.'

Im still clinging on to the small amount of hope that it will be replaced although I tend to agree that MG are gonna be focussing on SUVs for a bit.

I guess that MG will either stay in the BTCC and replace the '6 or they will pull out at some point.

MG have previously said that participation in motorsport is essential to the ethos of the brand - what else could they do?!

Nice paint job. Almost looks like a place for a Rover badge on the grill too.

Errm well yeah considering there is a Roewe version which is kind of Chinese for Rover and the badge is the same shape.

You obviously don't take that much interest in the new MG's/Roewe cars, most of the MG cars started off life as a Roewe and were MG'ised, oh yeah just like the MG Rover days et al.

The front/rear styling and the Volvo-esque interior show promise but the body looks bland and frumpy. Best reserve full judgement till the wraps are off I suppose.
