Diesels pollution & veg oil etc

What are the views regards the current anti diesel publicity on grounds of pollution that is bad for health?

Should those of us with diesels look at using veg oil, chip fat or bio diesels?

Alternative fuels used to be cheaper but are sometimes more expensive, though some say less polluting?

I don't think alternative fuels are really any less polluting. Vegetable oils are still made up of mainly hydrocarbons, which is what diesel is mainly made up of, and in my experience with vegetable oils, they need to be mixed with diesel to really be effective.
As for bio fuel it's not much different from normal fuel, but instead of being made from crude oil, it's made from plants, which is meant to make it greener even though it's again chemically the same as diesel. You still get the co2, co and nox
The only fuel you could say was greener is electric but your still producing as much greenhouse gas, it's just at the power station rather than from the exhaust pipe. The only real green fuel is hydrogen as its only waste is water, but hydrogen is hard to store and move safely and it is an energy intensive fuel to produce, which sort of cancels out any green savings. Until they invent a vehicle that runs on solar power or find an efficient way to produce hydrogen, all you really do is offset your emissions against something else. The best vehicle to use I guess is a push bike... if your worried about it anyway. I'm a mechanic and drive a 160 so yeah...

Older diesels will run on 100% veg oil straight off the supermarket shelves. Mine for one. It was over a 50% saving, but prices are not that good now. Stinks of chips though.

I actually ride a bicycle as often as I can. But I was wondering if the veg oil in the older Rover diesels (like the L series and older) would be a good idea for cleaner air to breath?

Veg oil isn't any cleaner to burn than diesel. The main pollution getting bad press at the moment is PM10's, minuscule particles of carbon with stuff absorbed onto them potentially. Veg oil burning will likely produce more not less of these (if you can measure the difference).
