...well, auto motor + sport tested them head-to-head...

the MINI is far cheaper in Germany...

So... We have a mid-engined, RWD, and relatively aerodynamic roadster against a FWD, front-engined rag top version of a supermini with the aerodyanmic characteristics of a Lego block, going head to head.

This is just proof paramount that BMW have lost the plot. Either that, or the editor of 'Auto Motor und Sport' ought to be castrated or publically stoned for coming up with such a ludicrous idea for a magazine feature.

They'll be comparing the Rhino Rover with a Range Rover next...

Sounds like the latest BMW in house PR stunt...............as it couldn't be a real claim-that would be laughable!

the MINI loses points on some, but not all, things...the price differential is €24,000 (MINI) against €30,000 (Mazda)...though it has to be said that if either car were made by Mercedes, it would win.

auto, motor + sport do not favour cars just because they are Bavarian...rather, they favour them just because they come from Stuttgart!

This looks like a non-story. The MINI is a 4-seater "premium" subcompact that just happens to have a convertible top. Just because a car doesn't have a roof doesn't mean its a sports car, what's next, a shootout between a Chrysler Sebring and a Chevy Corvette?

Or, then again, the Ford Mustang GT coupe has a fixed roof, so maybe it could drag race another hardtop, like a Hyundai Elantra.

Not fair to put a Mini against an MX!....... but the problem is, there is nothing similar TO put up against the MX!!..

No more TF plus the impending end of the MR means the MX has got the cheap 2 seater rag-top market all to itself!!!.......

Sad realy!... it would not have took much from MGR to better the new MX, plus if it could have sold in the States, MGR could have sold as many as they could have built!!....:sad3:

Well, there's the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn SKY sister cars. If you can find a dealer that actually has one in stock, and not marked up over MSRP, then they are both logical MX-5 competitors. The Mazda has them beat in terms of standard horsepower and equipment, but they should be a match in handling.

Only thing I can think of to pit against the MX would be a V8 Cobra.Same front engine rear wheel drive, similar interior space, similar size boot, bit down on spec, similar price....just a slight advantage in horsepower!!!!...or and you have to build it yourself.
I cant think of anything else at all, which is a real pity I feel,as there IS a market out there for cars like this at this price, people do want to buy them.
Such a shame.
