lots of oil around turbo and bottom of intercooler. L series

round the loud noise on my car. after cambelt was changed we didnt plug bottom of the airfilter back on properly so this is where the roaring was coming from! anyway while down in the pit looking up at my car the bottom of the turbo was covered in oil and the bottom intercooler pipe was also covered. is this common? maybe its leaked from somewhere else?
theres no loss in performance, economy at all. and no nasty whistling or crunching noises comin from the turbo?l

Some of them do tend to breath pretty well and dump a lot of oil in the pipe work. Try and find out if the oil is coming from the turbo, could be the seals are leaking.

Usually, if it isn't loosing loads of oil and the performance is up to scratch, it's nothing to worry about.

When my intercooler hose needed replacing it was covered in oil on the inside. When i questioned it, its normal for it to "breath" apparently. It doesn use any off the dipstick, and pulls like a train so i wasnt worried

It makes a lovly wooosh with out the air box on though i think

Regards

they are cracking engines, almost bullet proof. ive never heard of any common faults. execpt maybe the MAF slowing performance as it ages but by regula cleaning this solves it

i think they are brilliant. evryone raved about the 306 turbo diesel. but that had nearly 15 less bhp, less torque, was slower to 60 by about 2 seconds and struggled for 40mpg. the one thing its better at is noise, its quiter than the L series. thats not really something to be proud of though!!!!!

Mind you, the XUD Series engine as found in the 306 was a ground-breaking motor. Think how refined it was back then, when the best we had was the 1.8D Ford Lump? What a dog that was!

All you gotta do is see how many vehicles use the XUD engine......loads.

I don't recall the 306 Dt being that slow mind!
