Rover 25i 2000 - Cylinder head gasket problem i think

Hi there,

I was driving along today when smoke started billowing out from under the bonnet, on inspection the coolant water resevoir(? - i think thats what it is) top right of engine - had burst and was everywhere. It was brown and oily and this what was causing the smoke.

Anyway i checked my oil cap and it had gunk underneath, and obviously I have oil in the water system so based on what i have read previously i realised that it must be the cylinder head gasket.

Please help me as i have had mixed advice on what to do namely - replacing engine or replacing the head gasket (someone also said torching it too!).

Please could someone tell me this isn't as bad as it seems and likely costs of each of the above (first 2 of course) so that i don't get ripped off.

firstly, ring around and get some prices. You will need a new gasket set, new water pump and thermostat (maybe not vital but could be a reason for a blown h/g), a head skim for good measure, *maybe* new headbolts, a dam good clean of the engine and coolant system, new oil, new filters, cam belt (might as well change it as the mechanic will be there anyhow)

Without the headbolts look to pay 250-300. I've had H/g failure twice now so im kinda getting to know the prices!

Whats the mileage of the engine? is the car is good nick?

Check out best of british for engine prices. Buying and fitting an engine may outweigh the cost of a headgasket repair and could go again.

Does sound like HGF (head gasket failure)

But more vehicle details would help. E.g. Engine type (petrol / diesel), derivative (e.g. 1.4 16v), mileage, service history, previous problems...

Hi thanks for the advice.

I got a friend of a friend whos a mechanic to do it and it cost 450 for all of the things mentioned above, including pressure test etc.

He said it is a very common problem and sees a lot of it in the 25 and others with this engine, he also said that my mileage was pretty good (at 55,000) as it the majority he sees are between 30,000-40,000 miles.

I have a 25 1.4i W reg by the way.

Everything with that is going good now although I have another problem as my front wipers and scooshers have packed in, but I suppose its a new thread for that!
