Cabriolet Hydraulic Roof Pump Refill - [ROVER-CX8 Project]

Cabriolet Hydraulic Roof Pump Refill - [ROVER-CX8 Project]

When I got my Cabby I noticed the roof was very lethargic and
required a push to get it moving but recently it had become
useless at raising itself up again, needed two people last week,
I have owned FORD Escort Cabriolets in the past and they
suffered from a similar problem but it was down to a failed pump
cog, this doesn't seem to be the case on the Rover variants as
the pump is mounted vertical compared to the horizontal position
of the Ford units which must make them work harder.

After a quick investigation I found the fluid level was very low and after asking around on here decided to refill the unit with generic
clutch and brake fluid.

To remove the brass grub bolt you will require a 13mm socket or
spanner, be sure not to loose the rubber o-ring seal when you
remove it.

To fill up the fluid I re-used a rig I made to fill my 75 clutch
reservoir, came in handy for this.

I only ended up putting in about 40ml of fluid to get it back to
the Max mark, I then cleaned up the aperture and refitted the
grub bolt.

I had to make a couple of passes of operating do get what I
guess was air in the system, the horrid noises it was making
then silenced and I now have fully functioning and smooth
roof operation, link to a quick video of the second roof raising
is below, I hope this guide helps anyone who may encounter
a similar problem.

Leaking sump bowl on 97 cabby power hood pump.

I found the plastic sump or bowl underneath the hood pump on my 97 cabby was leaking due to a split in its side wall. I raided the kitchen cupboard and found an opened food tin that fitted perfectly over the sump bowl. It just covers the height of the bowl and acts as another external sump so the oil leaking out just goes straight into the tin can. I added a bit more oil to bring the level up, and now have no loss of fluid. This perfect fix might help another cabby owner with a similar problem. Cost - zero! I love zero cost fixes. I use Dexron 3.

Alex.
