This tutorial will show you how to display pictures in your messages. There are two ways of doing this:
Attached to the message
Hosted on another website
There are merits to both methods.
1. Attached to the message.
It is a picture stored on your PC that you upload to mg-rover.org and it is displayed at the end of your text. Before I show you how to do this, let me show you a message with a single picture attached. The next message has a picture attached.
First, type the text of your message and chose the picture you wish to display at the end of it. Remember, it needs to be 100k or less (102400 bytes). If you are familiar with PaintShop Pro or Photoshop then you can use these to resize your picture and even compress it. If you save your pictures as JPEG you will find they are considerably smaller than windows default type BMP. I may do another tutorial later and show you how to do this. Once you have finished your text, and you have your picture sized correctly on your PC, click on the "Manage Attachments" button in the Additional Options section to bring up the file selection dialog box. Browse to your picture and click "Open"
There is another really simple way to resize, crop, compress and generally manage images if you have Microsoft Office 2003 on. Click Start, All Programmes, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Tools and you will find Microsoft Picture Manager. It's a neat little programme. Dont know why Microsoft hide it away?
Your picture will be uploaded to the website and displayed in your message for all to see. Try and keep your pictures down to a reasonable size: 800x600 or 640x480 as they can take up a lot of storage space and can take a long time to download. Not everybody has broadband yet. The pictures used in this tutorial are all 800x600 pixels and around 75k each.
Next I'll show you how to display more than one picture in your message.
To display more than one picture in your message we have to use another method. This involves placing a line of text into your message that points to a picture or pictures stored elsewhere on the internet. These pictures can be hosted on your own webspace but please remember, if you are using other peoples pictures stored on their site, some of them may copyrighted and we wouldn't want to get Steve Childs the webmaster into trouble would we. No, good.
So let's say you have some free webspace with your ISP. For the purpose of this tutorial I shall use Freeserve as a reference. You will need to check with your ISP regarding uploading files to your webspace but the principal remains the same.
Firstly upload all your pictures to your webspace and into the folder that you want to store them. Let's say your user name is mgfan and you have uploaded your pictures to a directory called cars. Once uploaded your pictures will be stored in the following path:
It is important that you understand where your pictures are being stored on your webspace because we're going to need these addresses to display them.
There are free services available from popular sites like http://imageshack.us/ and http://photobucket.com/. With these services ytou will be able to store dozen of pictures for future retrieval free of charge.
***IMPORTANT***
Once you have your picture hosted on the web, test the validity of the address by copying its URL into a fresh window to ensure you can see it. Many mistakes are made because members are using URLs that simply don't work.
Place the cursor on the line in your message where you want the picture to appear and click on the IMG button.
A dialog box will open and you will be asked for the address of your picture. Enter the full URL as shown below. Obviously you will need to change the address to one where your picture is stored
When you have entered the address click Ok and the following line will appear in your message:
... I have read that:
"As a member, you can create Albums of images that are linked to your public profile. Albums can be created by visiting the User Control Panel, and clicking on the 'Pictures & Albums' link, and then clicking on 'Add Album'."
I have looked in the User Control Panel ... but cannot find the 'Pictures & Albums' link mentioned ...
But How the hell do you get rid of it or change it,
have gone into control panel,. and tried deleting pic, but get a Mzilla error message, about changing config, ???? wtf. lol
I know how to disable "Show your Signature"
but i cant change it,
I can't seem to attach pictures to messages, I don't have the manage attachments icon on the botttom of my screen
