K series 1.4, 8 valve, P reg with 62K on the clock, oil in the water, changed head gasket including head being skimmed, replaced the heater rubber hoses as they had perished due to oil in water system.
Flushed system, but over the past 3 weeks and 100 miles the header tank keeps having a thin slick of oil reappear and the coolant level keeps going down - any ideas please other than head gasket !!!!

who did the hg replacemnt... if it was a garage take it back if ya not happy.

if it was urself did u replace all the gaskets correctly or did u skimp and do the bare minimum?

check all hoses r corectly secured and not damaged. if u still cant see where the water is leaking get it pressure tested.

I think your right, good guy at a garage did the work, the HG had evidence of a leak, head was skimmed, timing belt replaced at the same time.
The heater hose had split and was 'rotten' due to oil in the water, may be over a few months, could be this may of been the real problem.
Now have a 'thin oil slick' in the header tank and a loss of coolant.
Thanks for the replies, but any more ideas please.

Assuming it's not HGF again and that all parts (including the cap) are sound, it sounds to me like it wasn't flushed or refilled properly.

Just splashing a low-pressure hose through will leave gunk if it was bad enough.

Re-filling too quickly will leave airlocks which - if you're lucky - will eventually work through and cause the coolant level to drop.

But it was a garage that did this, so like cooper1200 says, take it back and {ask them to sort it/demand they sort it/call Trading Standards} as applicable.

Latest news !
On Sunday cleaned out header tank, topped up to level.
Monday opened bonnet - header tank - empty - no coolant !!
Filled up to "Max" level, went for a run, 30miles, checked level, all ok.
Tuesday night (after work) checked coolant level, way below "Min" level.
Cleaned out 'header tank', filled with neat antifreeze.
Started engine, drove to garage (for petrol) 3 miles, coolant level the same.
No check Wednesday (work)
Checked tonight-Thursday, coolant level below "Miin", checked for leaks, no sign of any.
OK, is someone drinking the antifreeze ? - where is the coolant going ? any ideas please !!

Oil in Water

Sorry for the delay, had a weeks holiday, used the 'company car', checked the Rover on return, no coolant in header tank, no sign of any leaks on engine (gravel drive) no sign on drive.
As the 'head gasket' had gone and the heater hose was split had a good look at the radiator (13 years old), think the pressure when the 'gasket' went split welds, very difficult to see, changed radiator (£44), 'bingo' problem sorted, very pleased, no oil in coolant, no loss of coolant. Old rad still had traces of oil inside.
many thanks for the help, great site.
