Mg Zr - Loss Of Drive When In Gear

Hi all

I am desperate for some help. I have a MG ZR 105 2002 with 30,000 miles on the clock.

I was driving back from work the other day when suddenly my car stopped driving. It was still in gear and the engine was running, but just rolled to a stop. I tried selecting another gear but yet nothing was happening. The engine was still running the revs were still working as normal and the speedometre was moving up the more I accelerated, and yet i was stood still. I could hear a faint clanking noise until i put my foot on the clutch.

Anyways i got towed home and was told the gearbox was gone.

The following morning i started the car up and it seemed to have healed it self over night. But i didnt want to risk taking it any where incase I broke down again.

Any ideas on what the problem is before i get conned into buying a reconditioned gearbox and getting it fitted.

Also there are no suspicious noises, it still sounds the same as it did a year ago.

All suggestions are welcome :D

That's a clue...

Can you select gears without using the clutch whilst engine running?

If so, maybe Broken, Snapped or dislocated driveshaft?

Hey thxs for the replys

The thing is i dont understand why it runs fine now

The guy who rescued me said he checked the driveshafts and said they were fine, as they were not hanging out, which lead him to beleive it was the gearbox.
When you say it runs fine now - do you mean it's now driving OK?

If not, can you select any gears easily with the engine running without using the clutch?

>>as they were not hanging out<<The driveshafts could be broken or dislocated INSIDE the CV-joints or rubber boots. I've even known them break under that dynamic balancer thing where permanently damp unseen corrosion eats away at the shaft until it snaps under power.

Difficult to give an accurate diagnosis remotely without a comprehensive description with facts.

Thanks for the replys,

I now know why I have no drive. This is because the gearbox keeps pushing the drive shaft out. I have had a new one put in, but the gearbox still rejects it.

So looks like i'm goner need the gearbox looked at. I'm told it is probably to do with the planetry gears. So I will have to face the expense and get a gear speacialist to look at it.

Is this a common problem in MG ZR's does any one know? or does any one know a likely cause for the gears to fail in a low mileage gearbox?

Thanks
Reggi
