Intel V AMD

Been looking at replacing computer.

Current one is dual core amd.

Next one either quad core i5 OR 6/8 core AMD (similar price £400 ish tower only)

Mainly used for web browsing/watching streaming video/gaming (steam based skyrim/L4D2/HL2DM)

Anyone have experience of either processor?

cheers

I am a big AMD fan, from back in the days of when the AthlonXP pee'd all over the Pentium4 for half the cost, but unfortunatly Intel is the only option for me at the moment, AMD have lost their way big time. I'm sure they'll be back soon, their (ATi) Graphics cards are still the best though imo of course.

This is exactly how I feel too, I use to LOVE AMD chips, but there CPU's are just a little bit too far behind.
They still are great for budget computers with a nice kick to them, and there GPU's as said, are still top dog to me!

Cheers Stu,

Thrown the i7 into the equation.
Read a few reviews and you don't get that much more out of 2600 compared to the cheaper 2500.
But then again the 1 your link isn't that much more and seems good spec except the nvidia card lol.

Last 3 computers have been AMD but it's looking like the next 1 is going to be an Intel.

cheers
Dave

I have AMD processors at home in desktop and laptop and for work I have an Intel i5 based laptop.

For home more than happy with the AMD but for work, churning large numbers the i5 is pretty good.

Its horses for courses, but I would say that Intel have the edge at the moment and AMD need to improve their game and produce a quicker processor soon to retake the lead.

Bottom line though is are you actually going to push the processor to the max in anything you run?

Intels are better at number crunching for sure, but AMD usually run cooler and are less prone to failure. You can't go wrong with either.

The 2 bottlenecks which are more important than CPU speed are memory and hard disk. Good ram and a solid state hard disk counts for a lot more than CPU speed. Most waiting time is related to shifting data, not calculating it.

In the end i've ordered an Amd 6400+ (UPGRADE FOR THE 3800+)

So same tower/mobo (K9A platinum Amd 2+ and 850w psu)

Just need to get some thermal paste now.

Good choice, the K9A is a solid chipset. I ran a machine as a server for 4 years solid with that chipset without a glitch. It's still working (though retired to being a workstation). It annoys the staff a bit as it still has 16 fans in it.

Core i5 2500k decent air cooler and 4.6ghz all day long. There is no other chip worth considering in that sector of the market. Even its replacement from intel isn't really an upgrade. I mean sure I7 2600k if you have the money but real world and on a budget you wont notice any difference.

6400 in and working.

Had some issues with cooling.
had 1 of these on http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...589&CatId=1187

AND it did exactly what it should.(draw heat off CPU)

Unfortunatly it was sucked up by the PSU causing random shut downs.

Stock heat sink and fan work fine for the moment.

Thermal paste/salmon paste is there a difference.

Liquid cooling

Been looking at liquid cooling and this will fit the AMD2+ board.

Has anyone used a water cooled setup?

Build your own tower, much better as you can customise it better.

I used to have AMD athlon xp 3200+, but after intel introduced their core series of processers I changed my cpu to core 2 duo. I got Ati GPU though. The pc is overdue for an upgrade now, but shame, nowadays after buying a car, I prioritise funds towards car parts first. I will give the pc a treat, will need new motherboard and possibly RAM, though if upgrading.
