As far as MG badged cars are concerned, it has never actually stood for anything. The MG Car Company itself was only ever that, just the initials 'MG', although the letters were chosen because the beginnings of the marque started with the customised versions of Morris cars which were built in the early 1920's by a dealership in Oxford which was called 'Morris Garages'

The Morris Garages name has never actually been used in full in the promotion of MG cars until SAIC recently took to using 'Morris Garages' to promote MG in China, but the car company name remains just MG.

The fact that the dealer "Morris Garages" and the manufacturer "MG" are two separate things was reportedly the subject of a big tax case in the 1930s, as a member here posted - though when I google for it I only find my own posts!

PS that's "MG" with a big "G" though - otherwise you may find yourself googling for drugs lol...

There was also a short spell when under the stewardship of Nanjing Automobile Group they decided to rebrand the meaning of the initials to 'Modern Gentleman'

In the book, MG Log, Cecil Kimber's daughter Jean Cook remembers her father clearly stating that "MG doesn't stand for Morris Garages, it just stands for itself." This was because the M.G. Car Co needed to be separated from the parent company, otherwise Morris Garages would be liable for a hefty tax bill.

Google's wrong.

If MG was not the initials of "Morris Garages" then why was the company registered with "."s after the M and G - "The M.G. Car Company Limited"? There is also a story that even though it was a seperate company, it was still named as a tribute to it's origins in the Morris Garages in Oxford, thus the letters do stand for Morris Garages which is why the "."s are there even though the company is "MG" and definitely not "Morris Garages".

Sorry I can't answer the question why the company was registered the way it was. However further to the details in the book. The letters were given as a tribute to Morris Garages and CK said that M was taken from Morris and G from Garages, 'as a tribute to his employer' and "that M.G. certainly does not stand for Morris Garages as there were already a Morris Garages so how could there be two?"

However there have always been arguments over what the letters stand for, I recently asked the MGCC, their reply was;

Morris Garages.

That is a problem that no longer exists, although it is still the case that MG is not Morris Garages and never has been.

But haven't SAIC used Morris Garages in some of their branding? If you recall the pictures from Qatar the dealership there had Morris Garages on the front and I'm sure I've seen pictures from elsewhere (maybe China?) where Morris Garages has been used prominently.

So it's far from they are not and never have been though I do understand the complexity in the question of the initial naming of the MG company.
