Jatco automatic oil substitute
Just thought Id let everyone down under I was looking for a cheaper substitute for the infamous Texaco N402 auto transmission oil that MGR recommended which in Australia is like buying gold bullion (about $400 for a transmission re fill)
Called Caltex (Texaco) and it appears they do not bring that oil into Australia and that any suppliers who are selling it are getting it buy their own arrangements. Caltex did state that they believed that while the N402 was cutting edge in its day, technology has moved forward and their new semi synthetic trans oil exceeded the N402 and was very close to the original specs listed on the N402 oil. They also mentioned that Nulon (Australian oil company) appeared to have a fully synthetic transmission oil which tNulon claimed was a direct replacement for the Texaco N402. I did a check and found that Nulon do advertise their fully synthetic oil as a direct replacement for Texaco N402. I called them and spoke to their technical guy who reckoned the Nulon oil is fine to use in the Jatco boxes (Jags, Rovers etc) and even if mixed with the old oil,it will not cause any reactions. I have bought some of the Nulon oil and will be doing a transmission oil change next week and will post the results. |

Just thought id do an update for us Aussies re the Nulon auto trans oil.
Car has run perfectly for about 7 months now so the Nulon oil appears to be a great substitute for the N402. As a matter of interest also, re the odd sized thread for the MGR oil filters,rRepco make an oil filter for the Holden Colorado ,think it was the 3 litre motor, which fits the Rover 75 / MGZT 2.5 motors. |

Both my Rover 75 have been running on dextron II / Iv for around 5 years without any issues.
Any brand as Dextron is a specification. |

Your probably ok with that as it is used as a spec fluid on a number of other Nissan cars that used the same box.I think as it is new spec'd fluid it is probably ok.
The JATCO box running in the 75 did run at a hotter temp than in other cars and until recently the fluids on offer didn't do so well in a higher temp situation. According to the auto guys Ive spoken to these days they are having all sorts of troulbe finding alternative oils for a range of auto boxes and do try a bunch of different oils in boxes to see what works and what doesn't due to the crazy costs some of these companies put on oils for high end cars. Its all got to do with the slippage the different oils produce, some work in some boxes and not others. All I can say is Nulons fully synthetic does state it is a direct replacement for the recommended Texaco N402. |
