1.8 engine in Freelander

Hi All,

What are your thoughts on the 1.8 engine in the Freelander. Am I right in thinking this is a K-Series?

I'm currently looking at a 2000 X-reg (i think) model with 27,000 miles. I know that Head Gasket problems have been a past issue for the K-Series, was it resolved in the Land Rover Freelander?

Cheers!

Peter

Same engine but the Freeloader is the biggest culprit of HGF.
Far too small and underpowered to pull a bus of that weight around all the time without caning the c#@p out of it. Not enough torque.
Funny how HGF is the talking point of everyone since that bl##dy TV program. If all the K Series engines where laid end to end the line would reach to Rome and back. The failure rate percentage wise is very, very low in actual fact. Well within engineering acceptance limits. ( ask other manufactures )

Landrover where fitting this engine before they where bought out by Ford as well. ( same problem ) They did not blame Powertrain then. Now, it is " oh, the engine is no good from our suppliers ". Funny that, how responsibility shifts when you are owned by someone else.

Just to finish my rant for the day...
Bogwatch did not want to know about the facts when supplied with the details from Powertrain. Not good sensational TV i 'spose........

Problem was worse in the Freelander because they changes some of the cooling pipes because of the engine bay restrictions......

Anyway, make sure it's got FSH, and check the coolant weekly. If it's losing / using some get it check asap any any repair bills will be "managable" in size....

On the subject of Freelanders.
I've been looking a diesels.
Did the Freelander have 2 different diesel engines ?
I've seen some advertised as DI and some as TD4 ?

Funny how Land Rover managed to distance themselves from that little problem, isn't it. Funny how Rover took a slipper to the butt and Land Rover didn't, wouldn't you say?

Yes, they do have that problem, for reasons explained elsewhere in this thread. My dad's 2003(ish?) model had this happen twice. He was aware of the coolant loss and took it in before it baked itself.

I love the K-series, but it has no place in an SUV, IMHO.

Yes they did, the DI uses our old friend the L series, and the TD4 is a B*W based engine.

There's also an uprated thermostat which substantially reduces the chances of the head gasket failing on the K-Series engines fitted to Freelanders.

Details here http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elis...ine/kingk.html
