Post Discovery TD5 (Storm) injector wiring

Just out of interest, here's some pics of the inside of the TD5 Turbo Diesel engine fitted to the Discovery. It's interesting as the fuel injectors are cam operated (to attain the pressure) and fired/modulated by electronic solenoids.

There is electrical wiring actually INSIDE the engine, running in oil!

It gives trouble eventually as the wiring degrades and oil seeps back out of the connector and down the loom eventually finding its way into the ECU - bad news!

The days of a simple diesel engine are sadly over.

The red arrow shows the injector solenoid, the yellow arrows denotes the rocker operated unit pump. The green arrow shows the electrical connection from the injectors; this is where the oil emanates from when the loom gets old, then it drop down towards the ECU.

The green arrow shows the camshaft, see the roller-rocker for the unit fuel injector? You can also see the wiring and the camchain.

Finally, here's a good view of the whole lot....

I would do if I had the parts and the tools to hand!

Hopefully they'll be dropping through my letterbox Tuesday-ish

...and hopefully via recorded delivery too!

That's the only reason I took the pics, I found the setup there kinda interesting if not a little odd!

Who makes this engine?
Seems a bit poor taking cables out of the bottom like that.
Why not out of the top of the rocker cover I wonder?

Still built by Land Rover in Solihull. Only goes in Defenders now though. Stripped a few of them down myself. Interesting design isnt it. BMW did finish it off lots of very expensive German parts in it. One thing BMW did do was look after other German suppliers! Our own design though.

Definately a nice engine, a bit different, especially with the centrifugal oil filter.

Better suited to an automatic transmission really...bit easy to stall otherwise.

allegedly a cracking engine, quite how/what the centrifugal oil filter is and how it operates is as yet unknown to me.

As for the wiring, one presumes a regular 'clean' with a rag and some WD40 would keep the wiring clean and prevent ingress into the ecu, or alternatively deliberately fit a 'tie' (a deliberate low point in the loom) such that the wayward lubricant goes down there and not into the 'brain'

Interesting piccy's though....and a cam chain...eh?

The S Series was one of the first Austin Rover engines that had electrical connectors running in oil, but on the outside of the engine.....

I've seen this one before Dave, I was amazed to see engine oil in an ECU, especially as (IIRC) it's mounted under the drivers seat!!

I was asked to try and repair the ecu, it was obvious that a resistor and a transistor had burnt out....unfortunately I had no way of figuring out the component values/type.

Yeah....that's it, the ECU under the drivers seat, full of oil.

This one hadn't got this far, thankfully.
