Rover 420 diesel - Cam belt teeth / part number confusion!

Hi there, me again.

Got myself a P reg 1996 420 SD, and while it's the slowest thing I've driven in living memory I can do 500 miles to 50 quid, so I'm happy.

What's not good is that it needs a cambelt, and while I've done a lot of L series belts this seems to a bit of a **** to get the parts for.

Rimmers reckons it's going to be a 112 tooth belt, however lists 2 part numbers. The first is LHN10029, which is about £60. The second (also 112 teeth) is LHN100760, the belt I used on my ZS and my 1997 620 diesel. Rimmers reckons this second belt (with the same number of teeth) is only for year 2000 onwards.

Same with the tensioners, there's 2 listed. I don't remember there being a difference in tensioners - I fitted the same items to my ZS and 620 diesel yet Rimmers reckons there was a changeover at the year 2000.

Any help? I'd rather get the later stuff, as it seems to be the same but I can get the lot for £40 excl VAT rather than £150...

Ta.

Yup, kits the same across the range - all L-Series are 20t2n coded.

I suspect Rimmers are being specific to the tensioner 'upgrade' on the later models, the newer one was automatic with the earlier (and better) one a manual.

Bloody good price you have there though, care to share

If thats a full gates kit for £40 plus VAT I'd rip their arm off

I paid £100 for a full gates kit from my local parts suppliers, two belts for cam and fuel pump, both tensioners and idler pulley, everywhere else wanted at least £140

The later belt kit is identical but for the width of the belt, unfortunately you cant fit the wider belt as the the bottom crank pulley will grab and crush it's section

They're the cheapest as far as I know. Not sure if I'm allowed with my level of membership but I might put some sets together if I can get a discount in bulk?

No idea if people would go for it though.

Do you know the changeover date? I fitted a 112 tooth belt to my 620 and it was ok.

Are the narrower belts 114 teeth?

Time to take the top cover off and measure the width of the belt then!
