It looks like a good little car..

Having looked at the video it looks like a good car but it's a shame that the video review doesn't spend a lot of time at looking at probably the car's weakest spot which is the rear.

It they could somehow make the rear bumper not look so huge when looking at it from the rear then they might be on to something.

http://chinaautoweb.com/blog1/wp-con...saic-mg5-4.jpg

It kind of reminds me of the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer estate:

Maybe if they were to move the lights down towards the bumper they might look less big?

The only thing to consider is, would this make a serious Ford Focus/VW Golf rival?

Cheers..

Why is it unlikely they will make a 3dr model?

I need this car in my life but it needs to have but 3 doors!

Because 3 door cars of this type in China aren't very popular apparently.

It all costs money though and with little sales in the UK so far it might not be a worthwhile investment.

I think it will, I know 90% of single squaddies prefer 3dr over 5dr, so if they could make one that is in Astra VXR / Focus ST range I imagine they would sell really well, the patriotic lot we are...

AE and from what's been heard from the grapevine at MG suggest that a hot version is on the way... surely they won't embarass themselves by making it a 5dr...

Guys the MG5 is larger than the ZS. Was there a 3 door ZS? No there wasn't. The 3 door option was the smaller ZR, so if there is likely to be a 3 door out of SAIC MG it will be the ZR sized MG3.

However the ZS "hatch" was never a hatchback in the same way as a Focus etc and would have looked very odd as a 3dr. What's worse with the MG5 is the line of the rear door, looks so dull and utilitarian... far from sporty sadly.

The Astra is ZS sized and that came in 3 door.

The Astra is a coupe rather than a 3 door, about 80% of the panels are new, not just a deletion of two doors on the standard bodyshell.

Either way it's a sports model that uses bits from the hatch, whether MG do that or just a staight 3dr conversion isn't much of an issue as long as they offer something that's more exciting than a family-shopping trolley model.

I was just meaning that the Astra itself isn't far off the size of a ZS hatch in general and is available in 3dr.

Semantics really. Rover Group made both a 3-door hatch and a 2-door coupe out of the basically 5-door R8 Rover 200 (not to mention the cabriolet, 400 saloon and 400 Tourer...).

No.... but that was probably partially because Honda didn't want a 3-door version and also because B*W & Rover Group set out to target customers of larger cars like the Mondeo and Audi A4. The new R3 Rover 200 begat the Rover 25 and MG ZR - in both 3 and 5 door versions.

I think the fact that a 5-door Rover 25 could be owned (stereotypically) by 'grand-dad'/'grandma' and his/her grand-son/daughter could own a (typically 3-door) MG ZR and neither party would bat an eyelid about the racial proximity of their steeds is one of the miracles of the MGR era.
