Rover 75 CDT (116) - Manual gearbox problems?

Hi folks,

My 75 CDT (116BHP) Tourer Manual has now reached circa 118500 miles, and has developed rather a lot of "transmission" whine. My clutch was changed at about 80000 miles.

To me, it sounds like its coming from the gearbox. If I disengage the clutch or coast, the whine goes away. It is most noticeable at about 50 mph. My local garage thinks it's the gearbox too, but was rather surprised suggesting that he had not heard of any problems with manual gearboxes on the 75's.

He checked with a gearbox specialist to find that there does not seen to be any "exchange" units available either, thus they would have to take the gearbox in to explore the problem and refurbish. (current estimate cost £300 - £1200)

Has anyone else experienced problems with the manual box? (I've seen plenty on the Auto box but not the manual)

Regards,

Kalvyn

Hi guys & dolls (maybe)
my name is mike i have today become the proud owner of a 02 plate ZT with 93k on the clock, 1 owner and full history, wont tell you how much i payed as you will think i stole it, ( i didnt) it was a trade in at my local garage,
I heard the same noise from the engine as did the salesman when it was chopped in so he didnt give to much for it ,so niether did I,
and what a nasty noise it is to , sounds like the cam , not there all the time very intermitent, I decided it was coming from the air intake so took the plunge and bought it,since i got it home i stripped it down to reveal that i was i hope correct in my assumption as the rail for the butterflies was not connected at all and seemed to be floating about, I have located a second hand one and will be fitting it on monday, my question is , has anyone had any other same sort of niose problems i should be looking 4 and while its stripped to the degree it is should i do anything else to the engine, thanks for reading and replying,

ps OH are ther any good V6 mechanics around the b77 /Lichfield area in case i need one
thanks again MIKE

sounds to me like your air directional flaps inside your inlet manifold are chattering . check operation of visi valve motors 1 + 2 if ok replace the manifold.

The gearboxes are normally very quiet plenty of replacements about in breakers though, £200 to £500 depending where you go.

There is lots of debate on the oil to use I used Castrol SMX-S from Halfords

They are not easily repairable it requires all sorts of special tools to get them apart I could not find a specialist for mine which had a 3rd gear engagement problem so I bought one from a 2002 car with 47k on the clock for £175 after some hard bargaining.

my 3rd gear fault was simply this :

R75 CDT gearbox

My problem is, that it is very hard to change 2 and 4 gears, but not always. If I just change without pushing hard, or standing position, it is right. But when I start to accelerate let's say normally, it is hard to take off 1, and put into 2. It is the same with 3 from 4. Clutch is new (3000 kms), fluid level OK. What can be the problem?

Mike check the manifold you are buying before you pay for it
Secondhand ones needs to be dirt cheap as chances are it could also be faulty or on its last legs

Ideal solution is one from a very very low mileage donor

Once the rattle is cured also get the Vis motors themselves tested, chances are one or both are dead as well

how good was I

well i was right
and so were all of you who told me it was the manifold, changed it today and hey presto (noise gone) was i pleased (not Arf),
now to the sad news i started the car and it ran beautifull, reved nice, nice sound, not hunting ,not rattling, for about 6 mins,!
then it stopped [now what the f- - - -s up i said to myself ] well it seems like fuel starvation, it would tick over but not rev , checked all the pipes, vacumes, breathers, all nicely where they should be, so what is it, I phoned my mate who used to be on the motorsport at MG, he said TURN ON THE IGNITION, DONT TRY TO START IT, DEPRESS THE ACELERATOR 5 TIME FULL DEPRESSION, THEN TURN OFF THE IGNITION, WAIT 20 SECS THEN TRY AGAIN , WHAT THIS WILL DO IS RESET THE CONFIGURATION TO RESPOND TO ANY NEW PARTS, IT WORKED HIP HIP HORAH wow now we all know a trick i thought, well you do now , you may have all been aware of it , i wasnt, so was glad to find out about it, !!!!!!!!!!!!! to all you who gave good advice thanks
I did put a second hand manifold on < i have been lucky > i did find a place who have got some new ones about £525 in lincoln good luck and thanks again

regards mike

well thanks again
a quick question for any one who knows , zt drivers door will not unlock with the remote function , have to put the key in to unlock , but it will lock using the remote! any fast fixes you may have will benefit me greatly ,
thanks again

regards mike

Yeah, mine's just started doing that. I figure the solenoid is sticking and needs dismantling and a good degunge. The thought of messing about trying to get the door trims off without breaking the inevitably weak plastic clips makes me think unlocking with the key is OK for now!
