I have just brought a Rover 45 1.8,2000 w reg.
Should i have a new head gaskett seal and the dowels done on this, just in case(because i am lead to beleive that the car has the old plastic dowels) also the car is low mileage and was driven by a old man, so what procurations should i do or check,as this car will be driven fairly hard(up to about 5000 rpm).
Any advice will help
There is no certain fact that the gasket will go. If it's looked after then it should be fine but you are right in what you say about early 1.8's but that is mainly in Freelander due to the poor re-working of the cooling system. Also I would build the revs up slowly over time if it's been owned by the older gentleman as it's not going to be flogged just going to the shops and back and make sure that if you do give it a flogging wait for a good 15-20 Min's for normal operating temperature to be achieved.
lol,
few dont fink my rev counters droped bellow 6 - 7'000 rpm
she loves it
