how did gm manage to get this right at the first attempt?
its only now that other manufacturers are starting to catch up
was this the first gm europe car for a while that the public actually wanted/needed?
did it start thier possible renaisance?

I wouldn't have said that this was the only car they got right. The newer Corsa is not half bad and the previous Astra was an ok car overshadowed by the Focus in looks (wtf, not IMHO) and handling (Focus is a touch better). In fact if you look at how many diesel Astravan's there are around (especially motorway maintainance, etc.) they've done fairly well.

As far as I know it also served as the platform for the Zafira. Quite impressive actually if that is true.
Also they got the Omega right IMHO. Cheaper and more spacious than the 5 series BMW (ok, probably not the same kinda drive) I think in terms of productionisation/design the car did GM proud if not in sales terms.
