RAC have always been good to me, I too found the AA incompetent and my girlfriend found them really rude and condecending to her when she called up so we refuse to use them,
Also speak to your insurance people, alot of them will throw it in for a reasonable price (normally with green flag i think)

It depends who you have on the call ot to be fair
I had an AA man in a lay by eating his sandwiches once, i pulled over as i needed to change a tyre, showed him my card and asked if he wouldnt mind giving me a hand (was 17/18 and hadnt ever changed one before)
his response was yeah but i have to ring through, so i called through they advised someone would be with me within 4 hours! i said there was someone there already and they said i would have to ask him so i did again and his response was 'no sorry they havent sent me the job' and he sat and watched me try and work out how to use the jack and do it for about 40 mins. thought he was obviously a ******.

the next experiece I had with them which was a bit of a joke was getting someone out for a non starter in my works car park, they had a contractor out not a proper aa man with a flat bed truck whos words to me were 'have you used wd40?, i said yes and he then said ' oh well it mst be broken, ill tow you to the dealership and they can tell you whats wrong' i think his skills were being able to drive a lorry rather than fix a car. -told him not to bother, got a lift home and changed ht leads and plugs the next lunch time and it was fine.

The AA will not under any circumstances come out to you if you have had an accident, this is the other reason we do not use them, my girlfriend had an accident on a country lane, her fault admittedly but their response was just 'tough' and even used the phrase 'oh dear you have been a silly girl havent you' - i asked for copy of the call as we raised complaint to them. She was 19 at the time and I couldnt believe they were happy to leave a young girl in the middle of nowhere late at night.

RAC have been really good, and WILL come out if you have a roadside accident and need a tow or to check the car is safe to drive. they helped get me home when the manifold went on my old Saxo, changed a wheel and a fan belt for girlfriend, she used them for a home start once and i thought the guy was really helpful as did more than start it, he spent abotu 10 mins showing her how to do weekly checks at the same time and changed a bulb that was out for her

Like the others, both RAC and AA also use sub-contractors.

Beware of paying the AA for a year - there are no refunds if you decide to cancel or change!

Sean 220 is up and running. Hey we all have to start somewhere.
I use auto aid, although it is more of an brakedown insurance policy, you can call them out for whatever you want, and pay for that there and then.
You have to claim the money back like an insurance policy.
Its only good for anyone that can pay if they need help though.

i too have had bad experiences with the AA as has my Dad. Once when broken down due to a seized alternator the AA guy tried to tell us that the original item was no longer available and we would have to fit a lucas item costing £90! We got a friend to nip down to the local motor factors, picked up a new alternator of the original type which miraculously was readily available and only £25.... fancy that...... and drove it out to us. We fitted it on the side of the road and went on our way.

Cancelled our AA membership after that and never went back. Were with the RAC for ages and they were always good but now i get free breakdown cover thru my insurance on the Triumph which i think is green flag. Hopefully wont have to test out how good they are for a while....

also when my wheel and tyre were zogged, and I got the AA to remove the wheel and fit the spare via the French "call girls" of the ADAC in Munich*, the AA offered to replace the tyre onto the wrecked wheel for a massive £207 (I eventually paid £152 for the tyre). Without fixing the wheel, that would have been a total waste of time and money!

*The ADAC costs £70 per year with home start, full European cover, insurance and even a glossy monthly magazine! don't think you can join them unless you are initially in Germany though...
