Front suspension arms

These are hardy cast units, unlike the pressed steel c*** on other cars such as Ford etc.

That said, mine are knocking very bad all of a sudden. On jacking each side up this morning there's a lot of side movement, 3-5mm in fact. Track rod ends are absolutely fine & free of movement.

Re-bush arm or a complete new unit is my question???

Budget is low as just re-located 300 miles south.

Bottom arms for 1.8 litre + engine size are horrendously expensive if available OEM, & were not available as pattern parts when I wanted one 3 years ago (1.6 & 1.4 litre engine size have different bottom arms as ball joints have smaller tapers). So probable re-bush.

Is it the lower arm or upper control arms? If it is the upper arms - these are readily available, and not that expensive. If it is the lower arms, then I completely agree with the post above me. Be very carefull as any cheaper ones tend to be for the smaller engined ones. I diddn't know this, and purchased a lower arm for my 45 from GSF car parts for about £60......turned out that the tapered hole in which the lower ball joint fits, was to small. There are two sizes - 15.5mm and 17.5mm.

They are described as cast parts. So not the upper arms then.

Aye, indeed they are the lower arms giving trouble.

Right, be looking at re-bush then no doubt. My 400 went nearly 100,000 further on front arms, but then again the ZS is such a stiff ride in comparison it's bound to get more stress.

Thanks all

Take it the ZS and 45D has uprated arms then even though the lighter duty would still fit? That's scary!

Rimmers have the same lower arms listed for ZS 1.8, TD and 2.5. And as mentioned above not cheap - £284 EACH, but that's inc VAT.... lol....

lists only the 120 and 180 engines so you may be in luck ,but still double check .

did you notice any knocking noise driving over small bumps (cobble streets etc) ?

ive got this multiple knocking from the footwell / behind dash area that im struggling to locate without fully removing the arms to see. Visually all the bushes look ok and using a pry bar it all feels solid

damn these potholed roads, ive never had knocking on any car with only 74k on the clock

I think they will be the 1.4/1.6 arms complete with incorrect listings.
When I tried to get a pattern part for a diesel, which I was assured was available I was first sent the wrong side arm. Sent it back but didn't check the ball joint size. Was replaced with correct side arm - got it onto car - oops ball joint doesn't fit - "thats the only left hand arm there is". Got an arm from a breakers off a 1.8 Zs to fit my 45 diesel - it fitted.

I've bought an arm for my ZS diesel off eBay and it was correct. You can get them.

Actually, I purchased a lower arm for my Rover 45 1.8 from GSF car parts Ebay store, turned out to be INCORRECT. When I spoke to them on the phone, after they done some research they came back and told me that they only stock that one type - with the smaller hole for the ball joint. Why they have not updated their website I do not know - they specificly told me that their lower arms are for the smaller engined models.
