Hi all.
Am new to this forum, had 220coupe(NASP) for 18months hassle free, until now.
Car went in for clutch replacement, but before that it had a minor oil leak. Mechanic sorted most of the leak out (split seal on oil filter), but said that the engine/bay would require a steam cleaning to identify the source of the other leaking points. He suggested that it could be due to the engine being unable to breathe naturally and hence squeezing out of any gap it could find, therefore causing oil leaks.
When I took the car back, after the clutch fitting, for a test run, it did not run at all well. Once the cold start choke had finished doing the business the car settled to its usual 750rpm. However whilst stopped at lights I noticed it dropping to 400/500rpm before returning to the 750rpm. This has happened irrespective of distance travelled.
When I returned home the other night I was putting some STP oil treatment into the engine and my bro-in-law, said to try starting car up and removing filler cap. This I did and there was significant blowing through it, the smell was like the fumes from the exhaust pipe. I never noticed this on my old 216GTi. Perhaps I am being stupid, but I am sure fumes shouldn't emit from here.????
I mentioned it to the garage and they said they noticed it did this when it came of the ramp-after the clutch fitting. Suggestions made to me where:
1) Idling requires altering
2) Cat problem
3) Blockage between manifold and front pipe
Point 2 is invalid since I have a custom powerflow exhaust with a cat by-pass pipe
The engine oil was change 100miles ago, with engine flush being used prior to draining.
Any ideas from you guys out there?
Cheers loads in advance.
