hi there i was looking at buying a new rover 600 2lt td today on a r reg
after starting it for a while i opend the oil filler cap to check condition of oil and it just poured out loads of smoke can this when i checked the engine oil it was realy bad dripped like water of the end of the dipstick.
The smoke you describe is ( blow by ) which is waste combustion pressure that has squeezed past the valves. Most engines have it, but a new tight engine should have very little.
Also, removing the dipstick with the engine running is not needed, it tells you nothing, remove the filler cap on the engine, if there is a lot of smoke or pressure, put the cap back on and half withdraw the dipstick and place your thumb over the dipstick tube, if there is still alot of pressure there, then it is the piston rings / bores that are worn, but if there is only pressure at the filler cap, then that is valve wear, which most engines over 20k miles, will have a slight pressure, and as the mileage/ wear goes up, so will the blow by.
What it means is that the engine in your own car is less worn in the valve area than the car you looked at. ( so, view another one, lol ).
Also check cars with a lot of pressure for breather pipe blockage first, before you class them as a worn / poor engine.
