Unipart

Now I know Unipart got sold off years ago - but this seemed as a good place as anywhere to post this .....

As a kid in the 70’s my dad was a DP of a BL dealer – therefore at some point a got a Unipart promo LP with several radio adverts – introduced by Emperor Rosco!

I have no idea where it is now – but I do remember these – anyone else remember any?

She’s got a car to drive,
He likes to drive it too, they drive everywhere together,
Unipart makes sure they do,
From a filter that needs replacing to a light that isn’t bright,
Unipart parts make them right.

Unipart – better parts make better cars.

It’s fifty miles from London all the way down to Brighton bay,
I know ‘cas I used to break down all the way,
Then I discovered Unipart, you’ll find them any place you stray,
They’ll get you on the move again and sure keep you that way.

Unipart – better parts make better cars.

First part I can’t remember ….but

So next time your travelling along and you hear the sound of something going wrong,
Remember Unipart parts are guaranteed by British Leyland.

Unipart – Better parts make better cars.

Thank you and good night!

Scott

The 'Answer is Yes, now what's the Question?' was a good sales slogan.

Unipart was British Leylands Parts Brand, Got privatised in the 80's and are still doing well, although make parts for all makes, as well as operte a logistics operation.

Based in Cowley, Oxford (Just behind Pressed Steel aka BMW Oxford Plant)

Unipart DCM (Demand Chain Management) were still part of Rover Group's supply chain when I bought my new R8 200 in 1992!

I picked up a Metro poster ad with that slogan on it. Struck me as a bit odd!

Oooh, takes me back that one. Used to be a little jingle strapline warbled by a lady. "The answer is Yes, Now what's the question.....?" Wan't telly great back then!

Around the same time Berger paints also had an advert running with a superb cheese-riddled song. And it used to have a lovely lingering shot of a SD1 in it.

Ain't it quaint
Nobody wants to know your name
But everybody loves your paint
Ber-ger!

Oh God, I really should get out more........

Then there was the slogan 'Thousands of parts for millions of cars' which Tatts above has reminded us of.

It was excellent; everyone knew Unipart was part of British Leyland and that you could get bits for your Austin, Morris, Triumph, Rover etc from them but when they had that huge accompanying ad which had maybe 100 cars including cars like Renaults, Datsuns etc, it really drove the message home that the company really did supply parts for just about every motor around.

It was on TV such a lot as well, and in so many magazines, on hoardings and so on; they must have spent a packet on advertising and it certainly drove the message home.

You can still get Unipart stuff today through Express Factors and very good it is too.

That was a later one though wasn't it? After "The answer Yes,..." one. More early '80s IIRC.

I worked for a motor spares company when I was teenager in the early 80's The sign for Unipart, Clutches Fit was placed on display board behind the shop. Being mischievious at the time I modified it from other stickers to say

Unipart, Crutches Fit.

20 years later it is still there!!

I think it was after that one, but I'm sure it was late 1970s. I remember the picture with all the different cars in it and sure it included some 70s designs.

I'll try and find out more.
