smoking turbo? can anyone advise? rover 220 coupe turbo

hi I own a coupe 220 turbo, which I have now got running just fine, the only thing i dont know about is turbos, how they work? etc etc...

the reason i ask is because every now and then when the engine is turned on, a puff of white smoke comes out the exhaust. this isnt everrytime, just say every fourth time at the most.

it seems to occur after the car has been for a bit of a run, up the bypass. I wondered if its anything to do with the turbo?.

the heads fine, no oil in water or water in oil,etc etc..

can anyone help???

cheers mike

As a rule of thumb, if the 'smoke' dissipates quickly into the air its caused by condensation in the exhaust. If it lingers and smells fuelly or oily and theres no accompanying gunk in the oil or water, its the oil seal in the turbo housing starting to fail. Does it smoke on overrun? or when you boot it??

Personally i dont think you have much to worry about ~ my punto GT did this now and again and that had a recon engine and new turbo! Its most likely moisture burning off, but probably wouldn't hurt to get a garages opinion just in case

thanks for the reply, it does disperse quickly and goes off into the air in a quick cloud, there isnt any smell and afterwards the exhaust has no smoke from it.

if its just been standing for days it doesnt happen,

cheers for your help mike

if a turbo seals are gone is that complete new turbo time, or can you get them reconditioned??

Not just common to rovers this....i've had several turbo'd motors from different marques and theyve all done it to one degree or another. If you're not getting smoke on gear changes or when you give it some WooHaa i wouldnt worry about it.....
New turbo's are BUCKS!!! Fiat quoted me nearly 600 quid for what is effectively a pretty smallfry unit. Turbo dynamics did me a hybrid for the same money, but a basic recon is around half the 'new' price provided the casing isn't completely U/S as this will be done on an exchange basis. Hope thats of some use
