I have been having problems with hot starting, long fast run stop and won't restart for several minutes. I have been advised that replacing the brown engine coolant temp sensor will cure it but I don't follow why. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

Am I being thick? I have read through those tech articles a number of times and none refer to not starting up when hot. The car isn't overheating according to the oil or coolant gauges. So am I right then to assume that the brown sensor is buggered and telling the ECU that it shouldn't let the car start as it is has overheated? Both fans are working too by the way.

The temp sensor can give poor hot starting because it is informing the ECU that the engine is still cold, so will be effectively "flooding" the engine.

They normally fail the other way round causing poor cold starting because the ECU thinks the engine is hot so therefore doesn't increase injection time.

Ah now that makes a lot of sense as there is always a petrol smell once it gets going again. Thanks for that. I think it's always best to get an understanding of these things otherwise you are at the mercy of the mechanics!

Changed the sensor on sunday and went on a short shopping trip monday. Coolant got up to temperature quickly as usual and when I drove back i switched off and restarted a minute later with no problem. Real test will be stopping for petrol next motorway trip but first impressions are looking good!
