MGF - Wet drivers side carpet!

Well, i've suspected there to be a leak on the drivers side of my car somewhere for a while now but today i got in and the floor was drenched!
Pulled up the carpet in the drivers side footwell (had to removed the foot rest to do this properly) and pulled out the sound proofing, squeased about a pint of water out of it!!! not good!

After hanging the sound proofing out to dry i got on with cleaning up the floor and then onto finding he source of the leak. pouring water over the air intake (scuttle panel) did not produce any water but when i poured it over the bonnet i managed to spot water leaking down from behind here:

Heres a pic i took with the camera pointing up there, you can clearly see where the water has been running down.


further inspection and bottles of water revealed that only when i poured water over the hinge/gap between the wing (see pic below) did i get water coming in.


I have filled the back of this area with silicone sealant to hopefully block the area a bit, i think it must be leaking though a hole in the bodywork where some wealding has not quite been done properly. If anyone has experienced this or has some pointers for getting to the area better for a closer inpection let me know. Has anybody else had this same problem?

Go ahead mate! will check to dayto see if I've fixed the leak as its been raining all night! (really hope its fixed! )

You will need an 8mm Socket and a small extension bar to get all 3 nuts off of the foot rest (2 infront and 1 behind), also dont forget to remove the carpet retaining thingies!

Well, got in the car..and its soaking again!! will ahve another looksy tomorrow, anyone know how easy it is to take scuttle panel and wing off?

I would start by taking off the plastic inner wheel arch protector off and clean any rubbish off that have built up and possibly stopping any water getting away.

AARRGGHHH! Typical! i try and find/fix a leak and is ****es down all day! somebody give me a garage!!

starting to really get to me now, one leak after another, now i also find that my seats get wet when it rains since fittting the hard top too! Goddamn rover and their crappy workmanship!

Tear an old towel in to smallish sections. Put a piece of towel on the front corner of the seat squab with a tail hanging down towards the floor. Won't stop water getting in but will stop it running in to the seat cushion. keep the wet towel to clean your hands after changing the punctured wheel.

OK....i can see exactly where the water is getting from the inside but cannot for the life of me locate the position from under the bonnet, taken the scuttle panel off etc so have decided i need to plug it from inside but even aying on my back i still cant reach it. Its behind the fusebox and loads of wires which isn't a great thing in itself! is it easy to remove the fusebox etc to get to the hole?

fusebox is held in by 2 10mm nuts at the top, easy peasy

My god, what an absolute pain in the backside of a job, though once i had loosend off the fusebox (cheers pete) I was just able to get behind it with some silicone sealant on my thumb and plug it up.....It's Fixed!! wasn't the most comfortable job laying in the footwell with my legs hanging out the car but got there in the end...now to sort the hard top leaks out..

remember that position - you'll need it when the brake lights start sticking on and you need to change the switch behind the brake pedal.

That's encouraging.... ahh well, hopefully all sorted now will see how it goes, in the mean time i need to arrange for some help with changing my coolant pipes (yet another leak on my car).

I seem to have exactly the same problem on my F. Could you shed any light on exactly where behind the fuse box the leak was coming from or was it plainly obvious once you got underneath and had a look.

If this is of any use to anyone, I traced a waterleak into my 2000 X MGF to the gasket around the base of the clutch master cylinder - dripping onto the clutch pedal mechanism & then into the carpet. Sealant around the base cured that problem although I have discovered it is still coming in from somewhere else - only discovered this site today so will try some of the other fixes listed here.
