Smile Aquired a glass rear
Hi Guys. Well without reading this thread i saw a glass rear panel and went ahead and bought it for £150! Hmmm....
So I rush back home, unzip my old plastic pile of poo, and low and behold the damn zips are different. Undeterred I sew the new zip into the hood (albeit wonky on the first attempt!). I offer up the velcro strips on the glass panel and they fit perfectly, as does the zipped area.
Now at this point, before I actually removed the old plastic window panel, i held the new glass one at the bottom end and opened the hood.
All seeemed to go well until the hood was about 3/4 open, then it became apparent that the hood had 'tightened up' against the glass and wouldnt fold any further.
The wierd thing is that the glass panel fits PERFECTLY, so I cant see what MGR have done to the hood/frame combination to allow it to fold with the glass rear panel? It really does all fit exactly together! I wonder if the rear bar sits differently or something? Anyone else been fool hardy enough to get this far and solve this? If so, or if anyone wants to help me solve it, I think we can get hold of the rears from my local Xpart for £150 while they last!

it says further up that the rear bar is different. Can't see why they didnt sell a cover with NO window. After all you see hundreds of vans with no rear windows.

Rear Bar
OK, if the rear bar is different (sorry didn't see that bit!) then can someone take a photo of it maybe in shape? Im sure there must be a way to alter the bar! I have a welder.

I cant see that they would have done much to the hood frame as MGR was on the point of collapse and let's face it they had no money to do much, which is why the latest heater knobs were nice looking but oh so cheap and nasty!

Been thinking.... dont suppose it's something simple like they turned the bar round or something? It has to be something really simple or they wouldnt have done it themselves in the first place.... we all love our F's/TF's but also know how cheapskate MGR towards the end!

Anyone got a good photo of theh INSIDE of the frame at the rear of a glass MGR roof?

As mentioned part of the frame design is different and wouldnt be something you could resolve with a welder! It will be like

hmmm..
Not sure i agree... without proof anyway!

If the frame design is so different how comes you can put a sportster hood on your existing frame? I know the sportster hood is slightly different but there is actually MORE give in the MGR one as the zip area has more cloth around it to fold more! I'm just not convinced this isnt fairly easily solved.

If I could get a closeup shot of a glass frame maybe it can be sorted - we shouldnt be so defeatest! Just think - if it is solveable then we can have glass added to existing hoods at mush less cost that a new hood!

Sorry if I sound antagonistic but I'm not in the habit of giving up so easily!

Beacause the sportster canvas is all in one, not 2 seperate parts like the original, so just folds with the frame movement.

Thats my point. My hood TIGHTENS up with the MGR glass rear - now as I have MORE loose material available than the sportster there should be more than enough give, but there isnt. All I need is that pic of the inside of the frame to see where it sits on the hood to see where the alteration has been made. It may not be made in the bars but in the hinge even? From the pics I've seen inside so far I can see that the bar seems to sit next to the zip area in exactly the same position - so i'm leaning towards the folding has been altered somehow.

It's gotta be worth a try surely?

Also the BAS Sporster one has two extra straps at the rear to take the weight of the glass. Fitting an OEM one into a plastic designed hood could cause the hood seams to break after a while.

To be honest, I haven't had much luck with my hood, and to Steve's (BAS) credit, he offered to replace it straght away with a brand new one!

But that was a year ago, and I STILL haven't managed to get my butt to Wales to swap it.

It does fit!
Hi guys, just got in from the lovely sunny (and while I was working in it rainy) day (its sunny again now i've stopped!).

Here's a pic of 'Meg' with her new glass rear screen panel. Many many thanks to tompickett2 who kindly took some pictures of his 99 frame with a 2005 cover. There's a few bits to tinker with but basically it does fit ( few bit's you'll have to remove (which i havent done yet), and then you CAN fit the new style MGR glass screen panel to an old Mk2 hood....

I took photos along the way so I'll do a step by step as soon as i can!
