new to forum, gearbox help needed

Have a 2003 MGZS 2.0td 83 kw, have done just over 63000 miles and there is a terrible noise coming from the front end. On looking under the bonnet grabbing driveshafts, there is a lot of movement, up/down, front / back , in/ out on both sides. Been told by a mechanic friend that its possibly the diff bearings knackered. he checked oil level-ok and speedo gearing -ok.
Is this a common problem , or did I get a friday afternoon gearbox?
Is it expensive to repair? or cheaper to get recon box?
Any ideas where to get a good deal from
Cheers in Advance
Robbo

forgot to add , movement is from the pots going into diff, not the main drive shafts
