2001 VVC engine in 1996 VVC car... Need confirmation

Hi all, my 1996 MGF had a VVC mech failure 2 days ago, which damaged some valves. I'm considering an engine swap (and a rebuild of my sick engine in a second time), and so I got an engine from a 2001 VVC.

Now my problem is : the ignition isn't the same on the 1996 VVC engine and 2001. The older engine had the coil pack located on the engine block at the back. The newer engine had ignition leads with 2 integrated coil packs
above the spark plugs.

Are there any modifications to do to get the enine working in my car ?
1000 thanks for your help. Life's so sad when your MG's sick.

Does your car have a distributor as well? You may find that the new engine uses the wasted spark system rather than the older distributer. This means that the spark plugs fire more often, even when not needed, hence wasted spark. Depending on the car it came off, I would think that you would need the ignition system, ECU maybe even the induction system. If you go the ECU route you may also need to add an extra sensor to the exhaust and have your central locking/alarm plippers programmed to the ECU.

I don't think the VVC ever had a dizzy.

I think your best bet is to look at putting the old ignition system onto the new engine.

Wasn't sure about the older VVCs, ignition wise, as long as their is a spark at the right time the engine should run. Will all the sensors be the same? It should be bodgeable but it just takes one sensor to be missing or wrong and the whole engine will run wrong.

Hi CJJ,

If you're talking about the distributor with rotor arm, then I don't have one. Otherwise, I don't know exactly about the compatibility of electronic distributors between pre 2001 VVC engine and post 2001.

Was the engine from an F or TF (not sure exactly when the changeover was). The best bet is to get wiring diagrams for both and compare.

Here is a start. http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl...language_tools

Would agree with Chris, in that all you should need to do is tranfer your existing engines cam cover, wiring loom and coil packs onto the new engine.

Another thing worth swapping from the old engine are the fuel injectors, as the earlier beige coloured injectors have a higher flow rate then the blue ones used on newer VVC engines.

Hi guys .

Many thanks for your answers.
I'll go and buy that engine, and cross fingers to see my MG work again.
